Printer Friendly Version - Garrelts Takes 3 in HK Boys’ Runner-Up Showing at Shorelines; Girls Place 3rd

Cameron Garrelts won the Shoreline titles in the 1,000, 1,600, and 3,200 for HK indoor track as the Cougars came in second as a team for the Shoreline Conference Championship on Feb. 6 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Haddam-Killingworth finished second out of 13 teams at the Shoreline Conference Championship at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. The Cougars (138 points) finished just six points off the winning pace set by Old Saybrook (144).

HK had 1-2-3 finishes for both the 1,600 and 3,200 thanks to Cameron Garrelts (1st for the 1,600 at 4:38.71 and 3,200 with a meet record 9:47.07); Andrew Meridith (4:49.06 for 2nd in the 1,600, 9:56.55 for runner-up in the 3,200); and Jonah Spector (3rd at 4:51.07 with the 1,600 and 10:23.02 for the 3,200). Garrelts also won the 1,000 in a time of 2:43.61, plus Meridith was behind him in second (2:47.95). Ben Rakowski came out on top for the 600 (1:24.49) and the 4x400 relay of Shahzaih Khalid, Lucian Afragola, Ryan Argo, and Rakowski (3:38.99) also prevailed.

Additionally, the 4x200 relay of Nick Formica, Khalid, Argo, and Afragola placed second (1:38.21); the 4x800 of Spector, Kurt Sodergren, Mike Callis, and Rakowski was also runner-up (8:48.67); and so was the 1,600 sprint medley relay in Formica, Khalid, Argo, and Callis (3:55.19).

Afragola was third for the 55 hurdles (8.64); Callis was fifth in the 3,200 (10:24.11); Formica leaped to sixth in the long jump (19-1); Nate Breiling (37-2) and Stan Chrznowski (36-9) finished 4-5 in the shot put; Jon Ellerv finished seventh for the pole vault (10-0); and Nathan Parker was fifth in the high jump (5-4).

The Cougars finished third among 13 teams by tallying 97.5 points at the Shoreline Conference Championship on Feb. 6. Coginchaug took the team title.

HK’s 4x800 relay in Lexie Bouthillie, Mary Coletti, Kelsey D’Amico, and Lizzie Early finished second (10:05.64) and the 4x400 of Julie Kelly, Sarah Blanton, Megan Little, and Jackie Stephens was also runner-up (4:20.64). The 4x200 relay of Little, Veronica Chrzanowski, Samantha Liptak, and Jackie Stephens took fourth (1:53.31); as did the 1,600 sprint medley relay in Andi Roman, Chrzanowski, Megan Toman, and Early (4:46.41).

Also, Maddie Brandon was third in the 1,000 (3:08.29) and Annelise Walsh followed her in sixth (3:22.08); Bouthillie found third in the 600 (1:45.63); in the 1,600, Brandon (5:20.80), Coletti (5:35.99), and D’Amico (5:36.04) came in third, fifth, and sixth, respectively; Stephens raced to third in the 300 (43.62); Brandon (11:49.94) and Coletti (11:55.41) saw a 3-4 finish in the 3,200, plus D’Amico was sixth (12:20.42).

For field events, Chrzanowski finished third in the long jump (15-9); Anaka Maher tossed to third in the shot put (31-1) and Adrienne Schultz was sixth (29-2); and Schultz was then fourth in the pole vault (8-0), while Autumn Strom tied for sixth in that event (7-0).

Next up for both HK track teams is the Class S State Championship on Friday, Feb. 12 at 4:30 p.m. at the same site.

The Trojans ended the week at 8-4-2 coming off of a 5-1 loss to Branford on Feb. 4 and a 3-2 overtime victory over New Fairfield-Immaculate on Feb. 6.

Against Branford, Scott Bradley scored a goal, while Josh Martinez assisted on the tally. Zach O’Toole had 25 saves, plus Finley Van Houten made another six stops.

Haddam-Killingworth took a 65-56 overtime loss to Westbrook on Feb. 2 and then the Cougars dropped a 50-43 decision to Old Lyme on Feb. 3. HK finished the week at 6-9 with a 43-33 loss to Coginchaug the following night. The Cougars need two wins in their final five regular season games to reach states.

Previously, HK earned its sixth victory with a 47-20 win over Hale-Ray on Jan. 29. Tara Murphy had 22 points, plus Meghan O’Brien added seven.
