Madison 13-U Baseball Celebrates Title with Teammate in Hospital

Madison’s 13-U AAU baseball squad not only recently won the East Shore Travel League crown—the club also proved a true symbol of what it means to show team unity and camaraderie.

Paul Tracy, a member of the team, was hospitalized at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital during Madison’s playoff run and was unable to be on the field with his team during those games. On Oct. 7, Tracy had a 100-percent collapsed lung, which is called a spontaneous pneumothorax. He required surgery and ended up staying at Yale for a week. Tracy then was at home for just a week and a half when his other lung partially collapsed. He was hospitalized from Oct. 24 to 27. Due to the fact that Tracy had a partial collapse this time, he was stabilized for the short term. Tracy went back to the hospital on Oct. 30 to have the same surgery on his the other lung. He was hospitalized again until Nov. 2, missing Halloween and, more important, the celebration with his winning team in his most beloved sport.

However, Tracy’s teammates were determined to make sure he got to join in the fun of their big championship triumph. The team came to visit Tracy in his hospital bed and bring him his trophy on Nov. 1, which was the day of the Tigers’ championship win.
