Hand Girls’ Cross Country Wins Hammonasset Crown; Girls’ Swimming 8-2


Allie Mascia qualified for states after winning the 50 free in a recent meet versus Amity for Hand girls’ swimming.

Girls’ Cross Country

Hand claimed its second SCC Hammonasset Division title in three seasons by edging Guilford 28-29 on Oct. 16 in Milford. The Tigers, who went 8-1 overall and 4-0 in division, also defeated host Foran 19-44. Megan Phillips won the race with a time of 19:53.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Tigers took on Guilford and Foran on Oct. 16 in Milford for a meet to decide the SCC Hammonasset Division champion. Hand defeated Foran 27-30, but lost to the Indians 20-35 to finish its dual-meet campaign 4-4 overall and 3-1 in division action. Colin Roth was third in this race behind a time of 16:21.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Hand moved to 8-2 on the campaign with a 91-74 win over Mercy at home on Oct. 15 at the Madison Swim and Racquet Club.

Highlights in this meet included the 200 medley relay team of Kelly Doktorski, Callie Weiler, Case Porter, Allie Mascia in first with a time of 2:01:10, Also, Lexi Valentin won the 200 free in 2:11.42, while Grace Lawton was runner-up (2:13.64); Porter was first in 2:31.47 for the 200 IM, plus Gabby Wira came in third (2:33.12); Mascia won the 50 free (26.1) and Johanna Doerr was second (28.55); Porter was tops for the 100 butterfly (1:06.55) and joining her was Poisin Beirne (3rd; 1:06.55). Additionally, Doktorski was winner in the 100 free (58.0) and then Ella Ahlijanian was third (1:01.83); Lawton took the 500 free (5:55.78); the 200 free relay of Caroline Genther, Doktorski, Porter, and Mascia prevailed in 1:52.15; Doktorski also was second in the 100 backstroke (1:09.38) and Valentin came in third (1:10.88); Weiler won the 100 breaststroke (1:15.01); and the 400 free relay of Emma Connolly, Genther, Lawton, and Mascia were winners in 4:16.59.

Previously in the team’s 86-87 loss to Amity, the 200 medley relay team consisting of Doktorski, Weiler, Porter, and Mascia took second place with a time of 2:02:10. Genther was second in the 200 free with a time of 2:07:87. Doktorski finished in first place in the 200IM in 2:21:95. Genther and Doktorski qualified for states in those events. Mascia finished in first place in the 50 free with a mark of 25.82 and also qualified for states with her time. For diving, Noelle Bergere took first, while Julia Bloomfield placed third. Porter took second in the 100 butterfly (1:06:38), while Connolly finished in third with a time of 1:06:41. Genther took first in the 500 yard freestyle (5:30:51), plus Doktorski placed runner-up with a time of 5:32:64. Genther and Doktorski both qualified for the states with these times. The 200 free relay team of Lexi Valentin, Sammi Crans, Porter, and Mascia finished second with a time of 1:52:29. Connolly placed third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:10:29. Weiler took the 100 yard breaststroke (1:14:69), qualifying her for states. The 400 freestyle team consisting of Valentin, Crans, Genther, and Kelly Doktorski finished in second with a time of 4:05:88.

Boys’ Soccer

Following a 3-0 win over Foran on Oct. 12, Hand defeated another SCC Hammonasset Division rival in Law by a 4-0 final on Oct. 16 to move to 10-0-1 (4-0-1 in division).

Against the Lawmen, Hand had 14 shots on goal and three saves on three Law shots. Jake Brown scored the first and only goal of the first half of the game at 29:59 off an assist by Matt Mills. For the second half, Mills scored an unassisted goal at 29:47, followed by Brown’s second goal (unassisted) of the evening at 25:34. At 28:35, Owen McShane scored the fourth and final goal of the night off an assist from Matt Henry for his first varsity score.

“I thought the boys played a real solid second half. It was great to see Owen McShane score his first varsity goal. John Hartmann and Mathiew Broquet filled in nicely for injured player Johnie Gulcicek,” said Head Coach Stan Latkowski. “Alex Cinicolo had a superb game in the left flank and so did Jake Brown with two more goals. I’m real happy with our progress. We are getting better as the season moves along. A lot of people are contributing. We are going to need that to be successful in the postseason.”

Field Hockey

Hand moved to 9-1-1 with a 6-0 home shutout of Sheehan on Oct. 13. Sam Pavano (at 28:56 and 17:26) scored twice in the first half, plus Erin Maxwell (from Pavano at 16:31) and Sophie Schreck (assisted by Cameron Ruberti and Nora McCarthy at 14:04) additionally added tallies to put the Tigers up 4-0 at the half. In the second, Ruberti scored on a pair of occasions (at 18:07 from Pavano and Erickson Richard and at 11:38 from Taylor Leckey) finished off the night. Hand (12 shots on goal) also prevented the Titans from having a shot on goal for the game with Kylie Gargiulo in net.

The Tigers then shutout Amity 4-0 on the road on Oct. 15. Alli Buller (twice) and Olivia Fenn scored in the opening half before Maxwell found the back of the cage during the second.

Girls’ Volleyball

After sweeping Foran on Oct. 12 and being swept by Amity two days later, the Tigers then handed Guilford only its second loss on the year with a 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-14, 15-10) victory on Oct. 16. Krissy LaSance had 24 digs, 20 kills, five aces, and two blocks; Ryann Corniello added six digs, 11 kills, and three blocks; plus Chika Ogbejesi dished out 42 assists for Hand (9-6, 4-2 in SCC Hammonasset Division).
