Guilford continued its dominant start to the year by collecting another two sweeps in the SCC Hammonasset Division against Hillhouse on Sept. 21 and Hand on Sept. 25 to move to 7-0 (3-0 in divisional play).
Facing Hillhouse, the Indians prevailed 25-9, 25-14, 25-14. Meredith Shank totaled five kills and five digs; Amanda King added five kills as well; plus Sam Shank contributed six digs on defense.
Hosting Hand on Dig Pink Breast Cancer Night, the scores read 28-26, 25-19, 25-17 in Guilford’s favor. Meredith Shank led the Indians with 15 kills and 26 digs; Jill Wirth had 25 assists, 13 digs, and five aces; plus Cia Mirrione tacked on five kills, six digs, two blocks. Additionally, Trinity Flynn tallied five kills and two blocks; Sam Shank grabbed 10 digs; and King had 15 digs.
Girls’ Soccer
Guilford shut out Cheshire 3-0 on Sept. 25 in a rematch of last fall’s SCC Tournament final to yield a mark of 4-0.
At about 20 minutes in, Jacqui Guerra got in with a hard, low shot that deflected back to Kayley McLaughlin, who struck in a 15-yard goal that proved to be the winner. Halfway into the second stanza, Andrea Basilicato found some space and dribbled into the box, where she was taken down. She finished the ensuing penalty kick with a low shot to the left corner. Guilford’s final goal came after an Izzy Nerney corner kick with 12 minutes left in the game. Her corner was cleared out, but the ball was put back to her by Bonelli. Nerney made a move and put a long, driven cross to the far post, where Paige White confidently got it into the goal.
“At this point in the season, it has been very important that we consistently attain two primary goals: show our depth as a team and play the full 80 minutes no matter the opponent,” said Head Coach Scott McMahon. “This Cheshire game exemplified our progress as Chloe Shaw and Molly Kosh both made their first starts of the season. They maintained our play, despite it being a tough game versus a serious rival of the past five seasons. While Cheshire had some opportunities, they were never able to sustain control of play. It is important that we continue to aim to play our game for the full 80 minutes no matter the opponent or game.”
Coach McMahon added that, “the defense of Chrystina Bonelli, Chloe Shaw, and Bronagh Lonergan were solid throughout.”
Boys’ Cross Country
Guilford traveled to Woodbridge on Sept. 24 for a quad-meet against host Amity, Sheehan, and Law. The Indians lost to Amity 20-40, but defeated Sheehan (15-45) and Law (15-46) to move to 5-1 (2-0 in SCC Hammonasset Division). Ben Siciliano took the race in a time of 16:30, winning by 28 seconds over Amity’s Tim Cannata.
Girls’ Cross Country
The Indians raced against Amity, Sheehan, and Law in a quad-meet on Sept. 24 at Woodbridge, taking a 24-33 loss to Amity, yet motoring past Sheehan and Law (both 15-48). Guilford is now 5-1 (2-0 in the SCC Hammonasset Division) on the dual-meet season. Guilford claimed places three through five at the meet behind Claire Keanna (20:23), Evelyn Ferrall (21:00), and Amy Puchini (21:20).
Football
Guilford traveled to SCC opponent Shelton on Sept. 25 and took a 56-7 loss to move to 1-2. The Gaels (3-0) threw for five touchdowns, while running for another pair. The Indians return to action on Friday, Oct. 2 against Foran (2-0) in their home opener with a 7 p.m. start.
