East Haven Senior Legion Finishes Year with Win

Mike DeAngelo drove home a pair of runs as the 89ers' Senior Legion baseball squad won its final game of the summer by upending New Haven 6-1.

The 89ers’ Senior Legion baseball team finished the regular season at 9-21 for Zone 2 play in Head Coach Lou Ciaramella’s first year at the helm. In the final week of the campaign, they played three games against New Haven and won the final one by the score of 6-1. The victory came in the second game of a doubleheader on July 18. In the win, John Kikosicki and Nick Carbone combined for the victory on the mound and Mike DeAngelo drove home two runs. Carbone had two hits and a key squeeze bunt to help score the go-ahead run. In the first game, the 89ers were defeated 6-5 with Albert Maio finishing with two hits. Tyler King pitched and took the loss, but wasn’t helped by four errors in the field.

On July 16, New Haven scored eight runs in the first inning and won 17-2.

“I thought we were a 14-15 win team, but things didn’t break the way I hoped. We got behind the 8-ball too far. The biggest thing is trying to get the kids to keep their heads in it,” he said. “In high school, they only won six games and then they got nine this summer. When they come off a bad season, you need to get their head straightened out. Sometimes, that takes a couple of weeks. I felt we were better, but I learned a lot this year. We’ve got a good group coming back, so we have good things to look forward to.”
