Hand’s Martin Takes 2nd at Girls’ Golf State Meet; Boys Place 6th; Pace and Weinreb Make Open Final


Justin Freund led Hand boys’ golf with a round of 83 for the Division II State Championship on June 8, which saw the Tigers finish sixth.

Girls' Golf

Hand came in tied for 11th place out of 15 schools with a 397 for the State Championship on June 9 at Orange Hills Country Club. The Tigers were led by Gabby Martin, who was second-best among individual scores with a six-over-par 80. Also scoring for the Tigers were Erin Schroeder (89, tied for 15th), Emily Schroeder (109, tied for 66th), Emma Boey (119, tied for 74th), and Morgan Werth (also 119). Martin birdied on hole No. 17 while Erin Schroeder was one-under for the 10th hole.

Boys' Golf

Hand shot a collective 340 to finish sixth out of 20 teams at the Division II State Championship on June 8 at Crestbrook Park. Scoring for the Tigers on the par-71 course were Justin Freund (83, tied for 18th), Jake Oliver (84, tied for 23rd), Tommy Pellatt (85, tied for 29th), Carter Chapman (88, tied for 43rd), and Cliff Baird (89, tied for 50th). Oliver birdied on holes No. 1 and 14 while Chapman did the same on No. 10.

Boys' Tennis

For the Individual Open Championship that took place from June 6 to 10, the Tigers saw the No. 2-ranked doubles tandem of Andrew Pace and Dan Weinreb (the Class L doubles champions) defeat Ishnan Mirchandani and Matthew Sydney of Weston 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinal round. The two then reached the final thanks to a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Amity's Gabriel Betancur and Nicholas Sabatelli. In the final facing top-seeded Josh Moskovitz and Max Zimmerman of Staples, Pace and Weinreb endured a long three-setter with the pair taking the opener 6-4, but losing the final sets 5-7 and 4-6.

Girls' Tennis

Hand had some representatives at the Individual Open Championship at Yale. In doubles, No. 13 seed Ryann Corniello and Alicia Imbergano first defeated Hall's Aditi Joshi and Sierra Moore 8-2 before an 8-4 win against Ashley Aufiero and Darcy Byington of Fairfield Warde. For the third round, they took on 4th-ranked Tara Boyd and Michaela O'Donnell of Lauralton Hall and lost 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4. Sheila Flaherty and Sabrina Colonese prevailed in an opening round matchup over Diana Cao and Emily Grandell from Northwest Catholic, 8-2. The pair then bested Alexa Iadarola and Stefanie Milovic of New Fairfield (8-5) and Watertown's Mary Zaborowski and Rachel Martineau (8-3). They then took on No. 2 Jamie Thimineur and Rachel Einbinder from Amity in the third round and took a 7-5, 6-4 defeat.

Boys' Outdoor Track

Hand finished tied for 17th with 13 points for the State Open Championship at Willowbrook Park in New Britain. Scoring for the Tigers, Tommy Wilson was fourth in the 100 (time of 11.10) and seventh for the 200 (23.15) while Ian Bergere came in third for the pole vault (15-6). Additionally, Kyle Boling was 15th with the pole vault (12-0).

For the New England Championship on June 13, Wilson was sixth in the 100 (11.11), plus Bergere was runner-up for the pole vault (15-9).

Girls' Outdoor Track

The Tigers didn't place as a team for the State Open Championship on June 8. Still, Molly Citrin was 15th for the 400 (1:00.33), plus the 4x100 relay of Cayman Brown, Gabby Harmon, Citrin, and Sam Schaefer took 20th (51.87)
