Guilford earned 15 points to tie for fourth at the Class L State Championship with junior and top seed Evan Powell capturing the singles title by beating out No. 3 Bobby Neuner of Darien 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in the final on June 4 at Conard.

"It was huge winning the state title. It was a tough match and my opponent was very good, but in the third set, I started to play my game and be aggressive and I'm really happy that I was successful with the style I played in the third set," said Powell, who had reached the Class M state semifinal rounds in both his freshman and sophomore years. "The match wasn't looking great for me, but I just tried to stay focused on playing my game and looking for opportunities to try and control the play."

Powell made quick work of Wilton's Tom Watson in the first round (6-0, 6-0) before winning by the same margin against Will Ludemann of Platt in the second round and then posting yet another 6-0, 6-0 final for the third round versus Femi Orisamolu from South Windsor. For the semis, Powell dispatched No. 5 seed in South Windsor's Peter Mao (6-3, 6-2) after topping No. 10 Nicholas Porebski from E.O. Smith in the quarterfinals (6-1, 6-2).

Looking at 4th-ranked Matt Murphy and Joe Boughton's path through the Class L draw, they first eliminated Nigeria Davis and Prince Omotosho of New London (6-0, 6-0) prior to recording another straight-set shutout facing E.O. Smith representatives Addicus Bagwell and Byron Schwartz. In the third round, the duo prevailed 6-4, 6-2 battling New Canaan's Theo Crowley and Carlos Mauleon. In early round action for singles, Jeff Eng saw the second round after a win over Ethan Baribieri of Torrington by default, yet he lost a second round clash with E.O.
