Hand Boys’ Golf Ties for 2nd at SCCs; McShane Takes the Vault Again


Megan Phillips was part of the 4x800 relay that came in fourth as part of Hand girls’ outdoor track’s 10th-place showing at the SCC Championship in May 26 at Sheehan.

Boys’ Golf

Hand took part in the SCC Championship on May 26 at Racebrook Country Club in Orange and finished in a three-way tie for second with Fairfield Prep and Xavier by shooting a 321. Notre Dame-West Haven shot a 315 for the title in the nine-squad field.

For the Tigers, Tommy Pellat posted a two-over-par 73 to finish in third while Justin Freund tallied a 75 for sixth.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Hand finished eighth out of 19 teams with 36 points at the SCC Championship on May 26 at Sheehan, led by another victory from Devon McShane in the pole vault with his height of 13 feet.

Also for the Tigers, Kyle Boling reached third in the pole vault (12-0) and found eighth in the 110 hurdles (16.80); Tommy Wilson was third in the 100 (11.32) and fourth for the 200 (22.95); Kevin Clarke ran to fifth in the 1,600 (4:34.64); Colin Roth paced to eighth in the 3,200 (10:19.35); the 4x800 relay of Ryan Johnson, Chris Parker, Conner Roth, and Garrett Noonan was seventh (8:37.59); and Troy Lefler earned eighth for the long jump (18-10.5).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Tigers earned 10th place out of 20 teams with 29 points for the SCC Championship on May 26 at Sheehan.

Scoring for Hand, Samantha Schaefer raced to fourth in the 100 (12.98) and was runner-up for the 200 (26.10); Molly Citrin was fourth in the 400 (1:00.49); Madeline Gould found eighth with the 3,200 (12:22.54); the 4x100 relay of Cayman Brown, Gabrielle Harmon, Citrin, and Schaefer was fourth (51.04); plus the 4x800 in Julianna Egidio, Emily Connelly, Gabrielle Egidio, and Megan Phillips also came in fourth (10:17.92).

Girls’ Golf

Hand made its mark a perfect 15-0 with a 188-224 win over Avon on May 26 before a 181-241 triumph over Norwich Free Academy the next day.

Against Avon, Gabby Martin collected medalist honors with a 43 and was joined in the scoring column alongside Erin Schroeder (45), Emily Schroeder (49), Emma Boey (51), and Morgan Werth (52).

Versus NFA, Martin again medaled with a 37 while rounding out the scores were Erin Schroeder (41), Emily Schroeder (50), Werth (53), and Boey (54).

Girls’ Tennis

No. 2-seeded Hand earned a first-round bye for the SCC Division I Tournament and suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 3 Amity in the semifinals at Yale on May 27.

In the semifinal tilt, Clara Wang (6-0, 6-2) won at No. 3 singles over Julia Forbes, plus Lee Jiaen (6-1, 6-0) prevailed for No. 4 singles against Lindsay Dragunoff.

The Tigers (14-3 overall) then prepared for the Class L State Tournament, which began this past weekend.

Baseball

On May 26, 8th-seeded Hand lost a 7-3 final to top-ranked Notre Dame-West Haven in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals.

Prior to SCCs, Hand (8-13) sealed up a Class L State Tournament bid with an 8-7 victory over Cheshire on May 18 as Jack Kallinich hit a walk-off, three-run triple with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Ray Miklos had a two-run home run, plus Drew Harmon and Bobby Lanza had two hits apiece for the Tigers.

“This was our eighth win and secured as a spot in the state tournament, in addition to already winning our division and qualifying for the SCC Tournament” said LaPointe. “Jack Kallinich’s three-run walk-off triple was one of the most clutch hits I have ever seen. I am so proud of this group for overcoming so many obstacles this year. We are playing some of our best baseball right now and have an opportunity to do something special in the postseason.”

The Tigers then lost a 2-0 final to Shelton on May 20 before a 19-6 defeat to Xavier on May 22.

Miklos had two hits for Hand and Harmon pitched a four-hit complete game despite taking the loss to Shelton. Facing Xavier, Kyle Freiman and Kallinich both hit home runs.

SoftballNo. 7-ranked Hand traveled to No. 2 Lauralton Hall for a SCC Tournament quarterfinal on May 27 and took a 5-3 loss.

The Crusaders went ahead 5-1 after four frames before the Tigers got a couple of runs back, but it wasn’t enough.

Hand (12-9 overall) will next look to the Class LL State Tournament, which began earlier this week.

Boys’ Volleyball

No. 4-seeded Hand was swept by No. 1 Shelton in the SCC Tournament semifinals 25-19, 25-13, 25-16.

Next up for Hand (8-11) is the Class M State Tournament, which got underway earlier this week.
