At the SCC East Sectional Championship on May 19 at Amity, the Indians placed fourth with 73 points.
Sydney Stofflet took the 1,600 title in 5:24.64, along with claiming the 3,200 crown behind a time of 12:00.45, Chloe Shaw was fifth in the 400 (1:02.19), Erica Vicino came in sixth with the 800 (2:30), and Jacqueline Guerra (5:38.71) and Evelyn Ferrall (5:40.70) were fourth and fifth, respectively, with the 1,600. Also, Claire Keanna ran to fifth in the 3,200 (12:31.01); the 4x400 relay of Shaw, Guerra, Elissa Strand, and Paige Dostie was third (4:16.37); the 4x800 relay in Vicino, Kirsten Morro, Teddy Stanley, and Andrea Basilicato came in fourth (10:12.27); Dostie was fifth in the long jump (16-3) before coming in sixth with the triple jump (31-10.5); and Lauren DeMarco found fifth in the javelin (98-2).
Prior to sectionals, the girls won 99-51 against Foran on May 11 to close out their dual-meet season at 7-4. Top performers were Mallory Peters with a state-qualifying, career-best throw of 87-2 to win the discus. DeMarco won the javelin (99-10). Ferrall won the 1,600 (5:46), Morro captured the 3,200 (12:51), Rachel Lauzier won the 100 (13:03) and the 200 (27.6), and Shaw took the 400 in 63.4. All three relays were victorious in the 4x800 (10:23), 4x100 (53.4), and the 4x400 (4:24).
Boys’ Outdoor Track
For the SCC East Sectional Championship on May 19 at Amity, Guilford found 10th place with nine points.
The 4x100 relay of Jordan Lembo-Frey, Corey Sondak, Sam Sessions, and Nash Singleton was sixth (45.99); and the 4x400 of Lembo-Frey, Nash Singleton, Sessions, and John Reagle came in fifth (3:34.48).
Softball
Guilford improved to 7-11 and kept its playoff hopes alive with a big 15-13 victory over Shelton on May 18. The Indians then were edged 5-4 by Lyman Hall on May 20. Guilford needed to defeat Sacred Heart Academy on May 22 in its season finale to clinch a state tournament berth
Against Shelton, Ashley Ignatowski got the win in the circle and also went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Offensively, Marieke Page was 4-for-5 with a double, two triples, and four RBI; Amanda King hit 3-for-3, including a triple and a home run for five RBI; and Olivia Boudreau was 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Guilford struck it big by scoring runs with two outs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings.
Girls’ Tennis
The Indians took a 6-1 road loss to Amity on May 18. Siblings Charlotte and Molly Babbin won at No. 3 doubles (6-4, 1-6, 6-3) for Guilford.
Two days later, Guilford (11-6) rebounded with a win over Sheehan by that same margin. Against Sheehan, Faren Roth (6-1, 6-0), Charlotte (3-6, 6-0, 6-1) and Molly Babbin (7-5, 6-1); along with the doubles teams of Madeline Montenegro and Claire Dinauer (7-5, 3-6, 10-4), Kate Dinauer and Samantha Stofflet (6-4, 7-5), plus Genevieve Wilson and Ritika Makhijani (6-2, 7-5) garnered victories.
