Huskies’ Baseball Take Conference Title Outright; Golf’s Win Total at 18


Morgan baseball senior Greg Lee was hit by pitch run with the bases loaded to clinch the Shoreline Conference regular season crown for the Huskies with their 2-1, walk-off win over Cromwell.

Baseball

The Huskies clinched the Shoreline Conference regular season title with a 2-1, eight-inning victory over Cromwell on May 20.

Trailing by one run, Morgan (15-4) tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Greg Lee was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the winning run and seal the title.

The Huskies faced East Lyme on May 23 before hosting a Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinal on May 26.

Golf

The Huskies have been dealing with some heavy emotions through the past few weeks, but they’ve battled hard and used their talent, skill, leadership, and experience to persevere and play for late teammate Joe Biddle.

Morgan faced its toughest opponents to date with a rematch against Hand, which had handed Morgan its first loss of the season, plus a duel against Division IV power Parish Hill. Morgan didn’t back down and added four more victories after defeating Parish Hill 169-176 and Fitch 169-217 at home on May 19, after which the Huskies beat Hand 169-170 and North Haven 169-205 in another showdown at Clinton Country Club on May 20. Morgan is now 18-2 overall and 7-0 in the Shoreline Conference

In the team’s first match, Maxx Bugg led the Huskies with a score of 40. Jack Bugg, Kevin Daley, and Burton Caldwell each delivered a score of 43.

In the next one, Maxx Bugg answered with a 39, followed by Caldwell with a 40. Jack Bugg recorded a 44 and Daley contributed with a 46,

Boys’ Tennis

Morgan faced first-place Shoreline Conference opponent Old Lyme and gave the Wildcats a run for their money in a 4-3 loss on May 18. The Huskies rebounded to defeat East Hampton 5-2 on May 20 and Coginchaug 4-3 a day later to become 12-8 on the season.

Against Old Lyme, Alan Esposito (No. 2, 7-6, 6-2) and Kevin LaFrance (No. 5, 6-2, 6-2) won in singles action. Tejas Patel (No. 1, 6-3, 7-5), Trevor Coco (No. 3, 7-6, 7-5), and Mike Murray (No. 4, 6-2, 6-0) took defeats in singles play. Sam Moran and Patrick Markovics lost at No. 1 doubles 6-1, 6-1, but Eric Peterson and Austin Remetta won No. 2 doubles 6-1, 5-7, 10-6.

In the win over East Hampton, Patel (6-0, 6-3), Coco (3-6, 6-4, 7-5), Murray (6-2, 6-1), and Moran (6-3, 7-5) won in singles competition. Esposito (6-4, 6-0) lost in No. 2 singles. Peterson and Remetta teamed up to win another doubles match at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1, and partners Dan Ayotte and Kevin LaFrance lost at No. 1, 6-4, 6-3.

In the triumph against Coginchaug, Esposito (6-2, 7-6) and Alex Harvey (No. 5, 6-1, 6-1) won in singles play. Ayotte and LaFrance took a victory at No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-1 and the Huskies won at No. 2 by forfeit.

Girls’ Tennis

The Huskies lost to Old Lyme 7-0, but then regrouped to defeat East Hampton in a doubleheader on Senior Night by the scores of 4-3 and 6-1 on May 20 and then lost its final match of the season to Coginchaug 4-3 to end the year at 4-14.

In the first of two against the Bellringers, Kate Daley won at No. 2 singles 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Emma Phelps (No. 1, 6-4, 6-3), captain Jess Garbinski (No. 3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1), and Darcy LaFrance (No. 4, 6-4, 6-1) lost in singles play. Doubles partners Megan McAllister and Riley Smith (No. 1, 6-1, 6-0), Sarah Krivosky and Gaby Rodgriquez (No. 2, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2), plus Lily Cummings and Brenna Andrews (default) swept the doubles competition.

In round 2 against East Hampton, which was the official Senior Night contest for the Huskies, Phelps (6-1, 6-1), Daley (6-2, 3-6, 6-1), Garbinski (6-4, 1-6, 6-2), and LaFrance (6-4, 7-6) swept in singles play. McAllister and Smith (3-6, 7-5, 6-1) and Rodgriquez-Krivosky (6-3, 7-5) won in doubles while Amanda Auger and Cummings (6-4, 6-7) lost in the final match.

In the loss to the Blue Devils, Phelps (6-7, 6-0, 6-0), Garbinski (6-3, 3-6, 6-2), and LaFrance (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) won in singles matches. Daley (6-2, 6-4) lost at No. 2 singles and duos of McAllister-Riley (6-3, 6-0), Rodgriquez-Krivosky (6-0, 6-0) and Andrews-Cummings (6-1, 7-6) took losses in doubles action.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Morgan lost its first conference game on May 19 to Old Lyme 15-13, followed with a 17-3 loss to East Catholic and ended the regular season with a 15-7 victory over rival Haddam-Killingworth to stand at 10-6 on the year.

Versus Old Lyme, Mateo Zumpano led the Huskies with five goals, Chris Waterbury scored a hat trick, Joe Lee netted two and added three assists, Ryan Miller tallied a pair, Jake Anselmo scored a goal and assisted twice, and Chris Vicino and Anthony Choronzy each recorded a helper. Connor Moran made nine saves in the contest and Choronzy picked up a team-high 10 ground balls.

Softball

In a rematch against non-conference opponent Suffield, Morgan was victorious again with a 7-3 triumph on May 19.

The Huskies (15-4) scored all of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Angie Cook had a team-high two RBI, plus Jen Dawson (triple), Emily Popp, Kelsey Hopkins, Josie Sullivan, and Ashlyn Chidsey each contributed to get an RBI. Popp struck out eight batters and allowed five hits and three runs. Sullivan stole two bases and Kelsey Donaldson added a steal.
