Morgan Golf Dedicates Season to Joe Biddle

The Huskies played with heavy hearts last week with the passing of Joe Biddle on May 10. Biddle was a senior and involved with the Morgan golf squad.

“This was a difficult week for us emotionally,” said Head Coach Eric Bergman. “We lost a close friend in Joe Biddle, a senior at Morgan and a young man affiliated with our program. The team has decided to dedicate the season to Joe’s memory.”

The Huskies continued the week with three matches in a row and won all of them, starting with a 156-182 victory over Old Lyme on May 12, then wins against Cromwell and Hale-Ray both the score of 164-184 on May 13, followed by triumphs against Hale-Ray 168-173 and Old Lyme 168-189 on May 14.

Against Old Lyme at the Clinton Country Club, Maxx Bugg shot three-under par with a 33 to lead the Huskies to their lowest team point total of 156 this season. Jack Bugg and Kevin Daley each shot a 38 and Burton Caldwell scored a 47.

Against Cromwell and Hale-Ray, Maxx Bugg led with a 38, Jack Bugg and Daley each scored a 41, and Caldwell tallied a 44.

In the wins over Hale-Ray and Old Lyme at Fox Hopyard Golf Course in East Haddam, Daley led Morgan (14-2, 7-0 Shoreline) with a score of 39. Jack Bugg posted a 40, Maxx Bugg recorded a 43, and Mike Van Ness shot a 46.

Boys’ Tennis

After a home loss to Old Saybrook back on May 8, the Huskies have been rolling in the victories with a five-match win streak to clinch a spot in the Class S State Tournament. Morgan started the week winning on the road against Portland and Cromwell both by the score of 4-3, posted a home win over North Branford 5-2, and then swept Haddam-Killingworth 7-0 to earn a spot in postseason play.

Versus Portland, Tejas Patel (4-6, 7-5, 6-4) and Alan Esposito (6-1, 6-1) won at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, to give the Huskies (10-7) a 2-0 lead. After losses in the last three singles matches, duos of Dan Ayotte and Kevin LaFrance (No. 1, 6-3, 6-3), plus Eric Peterson and Austin Remetta (6-0, 6-1) won the final two matches to claim the team victory.

Against Cromwell, Esposito (7-5, 6-2) and Mike Murray (No. 4, 6-4, 6-3) won in singles action. LaFrance and Jaxson Cooper (No. 1, 6-2, 6-1) and Peterson-Remetta (7-5, 4-6, 6-1) won both doubles matches.

In the home match against North Branford, Esposito (6-3, 6-0) Murray (4-6, 6-4, 6-1) and Patrick Markovics (default) won in singles play, plus pairings of Ayotte-LaFrance and Peterson-Remetta won by forfeit in doubles.

In the shutout of Haddam-Killingworth, Patel (6-1, 6-0), Esposito (straight sets), Trevor Coco (6-1, 6-0), Markovics (6-1, 6-0), and Sam Moran (default) all swept in singles play. Cooper-LaFrance (7-6, 6-0), plus Drew Marzano and Peterson (6-2, 6-0) took home doubles wins.

Girls’ Tennis

Morgan broke a losing streak by gaining a 4-3 triumph over Haddam-Killingworth on May 15. The Huskies had lost to Cromwell and North Branford, both by a 4-3 margin, earlier in the week.

Jess Garbinski (6-3, 6-1) and Darcy LaFrance (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) each won the last two singles action against the Cougars. The pair of Megan McAllister and Riley Smith (No. 1, 6-4, 6-4), plus Brenna Andrews and Lily Cummings (No. 3, 6-1, 6-3) won in doubles to seal the victory.

Versus Cromwell, Emma Phelps (No. 1, 6-0, 6-3) and Garbinski (4-6, 6-4, 6-0) won in singles play. Gaby Rodriguez and Cummings (No. 2, 6-4, 6-4) won the lone doubles match for the Huskies (2-12).

Against North Branford, Darcy LaFrance won at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 7-5; plus duos of McAllister-Smith (No. 1, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4) and Andrews-Cummings (No. 3, 6-3, 6-1) added team points with wins in doubles.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Huskies split the week with a conference victory over Valley Regional, 19-7, before an out-of-conference loss to Fairfield-Warde, 15-9.

Chris Waterbury led the Huskies (9-4, 8-0) with eight goals and an assist in the triumph. Mateo Zumpano scored five goals and had four helpers, Joe Lee netted three, Jake Anselmo scored twice and tallied an assist, and Anthony Choronzy scored a goal and tacked on three assists. Connor Moran made seven saves and Brendan Khyn made three in the contest.

In the loss, Waterbury notched in five goals, Zumpano scored a hat trick and had two assists, Chris Vicino added a helper, Anselmo scored a goal, Lee assisted thrice, and Moran made 13 stops.
