HK Track Teams Start 2-0; Softball, Girls’ Tennis Continue Winning


Maddie Brandon took the 1,600 on April 21 as HK girls’ outdoor track swept its season-opening tri-meet against Old Lyme and Cromwell.

Boys' Outdoor Track

The Cougars opened up dual-meet season on April 21 and swept a tri-meet against host Old Lyme (94-47) and Cromwell (76-53).

The boys were led by victories in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays, as well wins in several running and field events. Pat Fitzgibbons placed tops in the 1,600 (4:47), Cameron Garrelts took the 800 (2:07), Chris Kaufmann won the shot put (40-3.5), and Aaron Auer won the javelin (145-5).

Girls' Outdoor Track

Haddam-Killingworth opened dual-meet season with a pair of wins on April 21 against Old Lyme (93-44) and Cromwell (95-42).

The girls had several individual event winners while also picking up victories in the 4x800 and 4x100 relays. Leading the way for the Cougars was Anaka Maher, who won the shot put (27-9), discus (79-11) and the javelin (102-0). Also placing first were Maddie Brandon in the 1,600 (5:41), Mary Coletti in the 3,200 (11:54), and Megan Toman in the triple jump (29-10.5).

Softball

The Cougars improved to 3-2 with an 8-0 victory over Hale-Ray on April 22. Hannah Theriault (now 3-1) struck out five batters on the way to the win. Meghan Cerino was 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI, Rachel Senechal hit 2-for-3 with a double, Kolby Burger had two hits and an RBI. Ana Hale and Riley Mrozcka each had two-baggers for the Cougars.

HK then prevailed over East Hampton the next day by a final score of 7-5. Cerino slugged a bases loaded triple in the fifth inning and added a single in the seventh. Senechal had two hits, including a double. Burger had two RBI, plus Hale had a RBI on sacrifice fly. Other Cougars with hits included Julia Babbitt and Caroline Fortuna. Ari Masotti relieved starter Theriault in the fourth and notched her first varsity triumph.

The Cougars (5-2) next defeated Westbrook 13-7 on April 24. Theriault (4-1) was in the circle to capture the complete game victory. HK held off a valiant two-out rally by Westbrook in the bottom of the seventh. Burger had three hits (including a triple) and four RBI, Babbitt also added three hits (one of which was a double), Hale collected a trio of hits and two RBI, Senechal earned two hits with an RBI, Little tallied two base knocks and an RBI, Cerino had two hits and two RBI, and Fortuna also had two hits. Meghan Sepega and Olivia Whiteman also had hits for HK.

Girls' Lacrosse

HK took a home contest on April 23 in a 16-12 final over Suffield to move to 3-1 on the spring. Maria Cipriano notched 13 saves in goal while offensive stat contributors included Brinley Anderson (5 goals, 1 assist); Haley Gesick (3 goals, 2 helpers); Grace Lindell (3 scores, 1 assist); Katie Hausherr (2 goals); Julie Hausherr (1 goal, 1 assist); Emily Roth (1 goal, 1 assist); and Jamie Little (1 goal).

Girls' Tennis

HK evened its mark at 2-2 following a 5-2 road triumph over Cromwell on April 21 before a 4-3 loss to East Hampton on April 24.

Reilly Fitzgibbons (in straight sets); Emily Beck (6-1, 6-0); Jackie Stephens (7-5, 2-6, 6-2); along with the doubles teams of Dani Roman and Abby Shultz (6-2, 7-6); plus Natalie Brochu and Autumn Leavitt (6-2, 6-0) emerged victorious versus Cromwell.

Against East Hampton, the Cougars swept on the doubles side with victories by Brochu and Leavitt (6-2, 6-2); Nikki Clementel and Neve Blanton (6-0, 6-0); plus Alexi Vumback and Hannah Stankiewicz (by forfeit).

Baseball

The Cougars moved to 4-2 after a 9-7 win over Hyde/Hillhouse on April 21 prior to a 7-6 loss to Old Lyme on April 23. HK also lost a 13-1 final at Valley Regional at April 24 before a 12-2 loss to Granby Memorial the next day to sit at 4-5 overall.

Against Hyde/Hillhouse, Ben Alonzo, Tyler Popp, and Trevor Mann each had two hits and two RBI for HK. Owen Marica picked up his third victory of the season on the hill for the Cougars.

Facing Old Lyme, Brian Moskey struck out 10 and Ty Schuler earned two base knocks. The Cougars held a 6-4 lead after the third, but the Wildcats tallied one run in each of the last three innings.

Taking on Granby, Kyle Crandall had three hits, including a double, for HK.

Boys' Tennis

HK (0-3) took a 7-0 home loss to Cromwell on April 21 before a 5-2 defeat to Coginchaug a day later.

Against Cromwell, Colton Soneson (6-0, 6-1); Kevin Hunt (6-0, 6-2); Larry Sage (6-0, 6-0); Evan Stock (6-0, 6-0); plus the tandems of Ben Blair and Tyler Rourke (6-0, 6-3) and Cade Webster and Curtis Cook (6-2, 6-0) competed for the Cougars, who also had to forfeit at No. 5 singles.

Facing Coginchaug, doubles squads of Blair and Rourke (6-2, 6-1); as well as Webster and Cook (via forfeit) notched the two HK victories.
