Softball

The Indians won both of their games last week to improve to 5-3 for the season. North Haven first won at Cross by the score of 22-5, followed by posting a 3-0 home victory against Foran.

Sally Maher's club collected 16 hits and scored 11 runs in the third inning of the Cross game. Lauren Landino had three hits with two each for Aly Milone, Mia Martinez, Amanda Kenny, and Arianna Delvecchio. Ava Mattei won her second game of the season on the hill for the Indians, who are 3-0 in SCC Oronoque games.

Haley Arnaoutis then tossed a three-hit shutout as North Haven blanked Foran in its home opener, 3-0. The Indians scored all three of their runs in the second inning. Rachel Card led off with a single and Victoria Bouffard doubled to put runners at second and third. Card scored on a wild pitch and then Jill Oestreicher hit a two-run home run for her first homer of the year and a three-run lead. Coach Maher credited the play of her solid play of her team's defense in the win.

Baseball

North Haven has a record of 5-2 after winning one, losing one, and having one contest suspended when the score was tied while heading to extra innings last week. The Indians first played at Oronoque foe Branford and the game was halted after seven due to impending darkness and soggy field conditions with it knotted 3-3. Bob DeMayo's club then beat East Haven 6-1, followed by a 10-4 defeat versus Xavier.

Against Branford, Giovanni Torres walked and scored the game's first run on an errant throw by the Hornets' pitcher in the opening inning. In the third, starting pitcher Rich DePalma singled and then Nick Proto walked. Mike Kurk followed with a bunt, Branford went for the force at third base and threw the ball away, allowing DePalma to score for a 2-0 lead. Mike DeRosa's sacrifice fly then brought in Proto to make it 3-0. The game was then delayed for a half-hour in the fifth inning due to rain. When the game resumed, North Haven had chances to tack on more runs, but couldn't do so, and Branford wound up scoring two times in the bottom of the sixth to cut it to 3-2. DePalma gave up back-to-back doubles that made it 3-1 and then DeMayo went to Erik Esposito, who allowed the inherited runner to score on a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game. Then in the bottom of seven, Branford used an RBI single to tie the game at 3. The Hornets still had runners at first and third base with one out, but Esposito induced a 6-4-3 double play to escape the jam. Shortstop Torres fielded the grounder and tossed to second baseman Hunter Iacobelli, who fired to first baseman Kurk to end the seventh, after which the umpires stopped the game. It was resumed on April 28.

In the East Haven game, Kurk pitched 4.1 innings for his second win and Fusco threw the final 2.2 to get the save. Kurk also helped break a scoreless tie when he doubled with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and then scored on DeRosa's double for a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, Dominic Fusco singled, took second on Dominic Onofrio's sacrifice bunt, and then scored on Torres's sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. East Haven followed by scoring an unearned run in the sixth to cut it to 2-1. DePalma led off the bottom half with a base hit and Kurk roped his second double that scored DePalma, after which DeRosa doubled to plate Kurk for a 4-1 advantage. Steve Rife then reached on an error and DeRosa scored on the play. Fusco followed with a single to bring home Rife and seal it at 6-1.

Facing Xavier, the Falcons scored in the top of the first and the Indians tied it in the bottom half when Proto singled in a run. Xavier then took advantage of some errors to score seven runs in the third and go up 8-1, followed by two more the next inning for a 10-1 advantage. North Haven scored three runs in the fourth to make it 10-4. Torres hit an RBI single and DePalma singled home the team's final two runs. Trevor MacDonnell, Esposito, Brendan Clark, and Joe Balzano shared the pitching duties for the Indians. Clark threw 3.1 innings and Balzano worked a scoreless seventh in what was the varsity debut on the mound for both athletes.
