HK's Adler, LaRosa State Wrestling Champions; Girls' Hoops in States


Wrestling

Haddam-Killingworth hosted the Class S State Championship on Feb. 20 and 21 and finished in third with 155 points. The Cougars boasted two state champions in Grayson Adler in the 145-pound weight class and Paul LaRosa at 182.

Adler took his crown by defeating Montville's Austin Concascia with a pin at 1:51 of the final while LaRosa claimed his with a pin in the exact same time as Adler in his contest with TJ McMillian of Notre Dame-Fairfield.

Elsewhere, Mackay Revis (138) prevailed over Dominic Rivera from Windham by pin at 4:33 to finish third. Jackson Hines was fourth at 160 after losing by a 13-7 decision to Nonnewaug's Ethan Yates. The Cougars also had a pair of combatants finish fifth in William Watrous (220) and Taylor Kruck (152). Kruck won 9-2 over Enfield's Treavon Fort to earn his placement and Watrous edged out Robert Gray of St. Paul Catholic 4-3 on a tiebreaker.

Girls' Basketball

HK celebrated Senior Night on Feb. 16 against North Branford as senior captains Halie Serbent and Caroline Fortuna were honored for their four years of dedication to the program. With an overwhelming 65-37 victory over North Branford that night, the team qualified for both the Shoreline Conference and state tournaments in its regular season finale. Fortuna led the charge with 15 points on five three-pointers and Serbent notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. HK opened up play in the Shoreline Conference Tournament on Feb. 21 as the No. 7 seed at No. 2 Cromwell and the Cougars lost by the score of 74-34. HK held a lead after the first quarter, but the squad was then outscored the rest of the way. Serbent (11 points) and Fortuna (10 points) highlighted the Cougar effort.

The Cougars (8-13 overall) now turn their focus to the Class M State Tournament, which begins with first round action on Tuesday, March 3.

Boys' Indoor Track

HK didn't place as a team at the State Open on Feb. 21 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, yet the Cougars were still represented. Cameron Garrelts was seventh for the 3,200 (time of 9:36.39); plus the 4x800 relay team of Pat Fitzgibbons, Andrew Meredith, Ben Rakowski, and Garrelts finished 17th (9:09.00).

Girls' Indoor Track

The Cougars didn't get on the scoreboard as a group for the State Open on Feb. 21 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, although they still had some notable showings. Maddie Brandon was eighth in the 1,600 (5:15.08) while Adrienne Schultz finished 18th in the pole vault (8-6).
