Huskies' Fencing Progressing Strong; Both Hoops Squads Find Wins

Fencing

The Huskies had two road matchups against Hand on Jan. 12 and Cheshire Academy two days later.

At Hand, the girls' varsity squad (5-0 overall) won 9-7 in a very close match against last year's state runner-up while the boys fell by that same margin. The boys were led by Paul Nangle, who ended the day with a 3-1 record.

"The girls' match was a total team effort," said Head Coach James Barnett. "Our JV and novice girls' teams were also in action against Hand. These young fencers showed that all the hard work is paying off. We are very excited about the young talent we have."

For those JV and novice bouts, Meredith Reynolds, Olivia Silver, Grace Hull, Gaby Bussiere, and Nina Kelly each went 3-1 during the match.

Versus Cheshire Academy, the boys (now 1-5 overall) lost 7-2 with captain Andrew Tessman leading the squad on a 2-1 record in varsity action. Girls' varsity had the night off and once again the girls' JV and novice squads had great results by winning their matches. A great performance was turned in by Olivia DiGindomenico, who went 2-1 in her bouts.

Two days prior to the Hand duel, Morgan traveled to North Haven for the JV Individual State Tournament. Julia Horan was Morgan's top performer in taking home sixth place. In the seeding round, Horan went 5-0 to seal the No. 3 seed going into the elimination rounds. Horan had a bye in the round-of-64 and easily won her next two bouts. In the round-of-8, Horan fenced a bout that went back and forth, eventually losing 15-14. Other top performers were Amanda Thompson, Reynolds, and Tessman, who all made it into the round-of-16 in their respective draws.

On Jan. 8, the Huskies took on North Haven. The girls' varsity prevailed by a 7-2 final and the boys fell 12-4. In boys' foil, Tessman and Dan Ayotte each went 2-2. Going undefeated in the girls foil competition were Caleigh Heske and Thompson with 3-0 marks. Captain Erin Barnett went 6-2 in the individual épée competition.

Against defending state champion Guilford two days earlier, on the girls' side, the varsity group edged out the Indians 5-4, though the boys suffered a 9-0 defeat. Within girls' foil, Horan led the squad with a 2-1 record. In the individual épée completion, Barnett went 7-1 for the match.

Girls' Basketball

The Huskies earned a 67-32 triumph on the road versus Hale-Ray on Jan. 19 before defeating Old Saybrook 68-15 on Jan. 23 to improve to 12-0.

Facing Hale-Ray, Sami Ashton finished with 19 points, four rebounds, three assists, and six steals. Josie Sullivan (14 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals) and Jen Dawson (7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal) each dropped in a dozen points. Tori Hopkins added 11 points. Against Old Saybrook, Ashton and Dawson each scored 17 points with Ashton adding six assists and four steals. On the glass, Sullivan tallied nine rebounds and Kelsey Donaldson reeled in eight.

Boys' Basketball

Morgan (5-6) began the week with a 52-20 victory at Hale-Ray on Jan. 19 prior to a heartbreaking 58-57 loss at Old Saybrook four days later.

At Hale-Ray, Dylan Ketch notched 12 points, two rebounds, three assists, and two steals; Mike Murray added nine points, six boards, and three steals; Jake Teuner powered the Huskies with 12 points, five rebounds, and three blocks; Anthony Choronzy scored six points; plus Eric Peterson had a pair of boards off the glass. All 13 players that dressed for the contest saw action versus a young and struggling Hale-Ray team. Morgan controlled the game from the opening tip-jumping out to a 15-0 lead on some hot shooting, good ball movement, and sound defense as the Huskies never looked back.

"It was a nice effort tonight and it was wonderful to get everyone involved and contributing," said Head Coach Ken Beeman on the Hale-Ray triumph. "A good win to get us back to .500."
