Huskies' Girls' Hoops Unblemished Through 10; Wrestling Edged by HK

Morgan routed Valley Regional by a 72-32 score at home on Jan. 13 prior to racing past Hyde 72-16 on Jan. 16 to finish the first half of the regular season at a perfect at 10-0.

Hosting Valley, Tori Hopkins led the Huskies in scoring with 17 points, plus she added four assists and three steals. Sami Ashton tallied 14 points while Kelsey Donaldson poured in 13 points and seven boards and Jen Dawson dropped a dozen points and had seven rebounds.

Against Hyde, Ashton topped all scorers with 19 points while adding three assists and five steals. Dawson drew a double-double on 15 points and 10 boards. Donaldson chipped in with eight points, nine rebounds, and three assists.

The Huskies took a pair of home losses to Valley Regional (52-35 on Jan. 12) and Hyde (55-45 on Jan. 15) to sit at 4-5.

Against Valley, Dylan Ketch had 10 points, four rebounds, and four steals and Jake Teuner added seven points and nine boards. Morgan battled hard and successfully for three quarters, but a decisive fourth quarter (19-7 in the Warriors' favor) proved Morgan's undoing, along with 18 turnovers.

"That first quarter may have been the best quarter of basketball we have played this year," said Head Coach Ken Beeman. "Unfortunately for us, Valley is a veteran and skilled group that is used to winning and would not stay down for long. They definitely flexed their muscles in the fourth quarter and we did not have the answers."

Hosting Hyde, Ketch netted 20 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks; Mike Murray grabbed eight points and four boards; plus Teuner finished with six points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. Morgan was down 14-2 in the first few minutes following four three-pointers made by Hyde. The visitors rolled into halftime with a 32-14 lead and the third quarter was not much better for the home team, yet a furious fourth quarter made it a ballgame. Still, there was not enough time or made baskets to complete the comeback for the Huskies. Morgan shot 12-for-26 from the free-throw line, 15-for-38 from two-point range, and 1-of-6 from three-point land.

"We definitely got blitzed by Hyde from the start. I knew Adam Berton was a good shooter, but I did not realize he was that efficient, and he made us pay early on," said Beeman. "I do feel like we made the correct defensive adjustments, but we just could not put the ball in the basket. I know it is not from a lack of effort, but we must do a better job of making the easy shots we are getting. I will figure out a way to do a better job of teaching technique and increasing their confidence."

Wrestling

The Huskies suffered a close 34-33 loss to Haddam-Killingworth on Jan. 14. Sam Hauser (138, pin at 1:51); Rob Consiglio (170, by 15-8 decision); Jordan Corrigan (220, pin at 5:44); Chris Seales (285, by forfeit); and Sharone Foster (106, pin at 47 seconds) earned triumphs.
