Boys' Ice Hockey Falls to Amity and Branford

The Guilford boys' ice hockey squad took a 7-3 loss versus Branford on Jan. 3 at home to sit at 0-4.

In the Branford contest, Ricky Sandella scored from Chris Cafiero and Alex Corso while Kevin Gaudio (off assists from Stephen Thibault and Tom Cattaneo and then unassisted) scored twice. The Indians had 26 shots on net to the Hornets' 28, plus Kyle Dwyer made 21 stops.

"We played a very good team tough for most of the game. This was our toughest opponent yet. Every one of our players played hard so there is nothing to hang our heads about," said Head Coach Ralph Russo after the game with undefeated Branford. "Tyler Criscuolo had a great game for Branford and AJ Brink made a couple of big saves in the third period to keep us from getting a comeback going."

On Dec. 23, Guilford suffered a 7-2 defeat to Amity. Ryan Brand and Gaudio scored goals while Jack Petrick, Cafiero, and Joe Neleber dished out assists. The Indians were outshot by a slim 25-23 margin.

Guilford jumped out to a 1 0 lead at 2:27 of the first and dominated play throughout the period. However, Amity made the most of its shots and scored at 4:21 and 4:51 of the first. The Indians carried the play in the second until Amity scored at 10:34. Guilford answered at 13:25 to close within one, but Amity came right back at 13:53 to go up 4-2. Amity scored three in the third on its way to the win.

"We carried the play for the better part of two periods. We need to work on playing stronger defensively, especially after scoring goals," said Russo. "Strong performances in the game came from Kevin Gaudio and Ryan Brand."
