Hand Football Bests NDWH in OT 14-13; Girls' Swimming Competes at States

Football

Hand traveled to SCC Division I East rival Notre Dame-West Haven on Nov. 14 and scored a 14-13 overtime victory over the Green Knights to improve to 4-6 overall (2-2 SCC Division I East). Nick Van Dell was 15-for-31 in his passes for 148 yards.

On two occasions in the first half, the Tigers got inside the 30-yard line of the Green Knights (7-3, 3-1), yet were forced to turn the ball over on downs. The offensive struggles were also apparent on the home side in the first two frames as the Green Knights were sacked by Cory Walsh on 4th-and-goal at the Hand 4 to end their opening drive. For Notre Dame's last possession of the second, it worked its way down to the Tigers' 3-yard marker, however, Jack Santoro reeled in an interception.

Following three quarters and still a 0-0 score, the Green Knights went ahead 7-0 with 7:56 remaining in the fourth on a 1-yard touchdown run before Nick Leone tied the game on a 1-yard TD dash of his own.

In the extra session, during which each squad had four snaps to score from 10 yards away, ND-WH reached the end zone thanks to a 2-yard pass prior to the point-after attempt being blocked, which gave the Tigers a chance for the win. They cashed in on the opportunity when Reid Sweitzer raced past the goal line from four yards out on fourth down and then Tyler Phan's extra point sealed the deal.

Hand finishes the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at home against Guilford (2-8) with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
