Gresham and Watrous Named SCC Student-Athletes for September

Sixteen student-athletes from eight high schools have been named the SportsCenter of Connecticut/SCC Scholar Athletes of the Month for September and two of them were Guilford athletes in Ned Gresham and Olivia Watrous.

Student athletes who are selected must be a varsity letter-winner and have a 3.0 grade-point average while demonstrating leadership qualities such as being a positive role model, helping teammates overcome adversity, showing a commitment to self-improvement, or putting the needs of the team before themselves.

A member of the Indians' soccer and crew teams, Gresham sports an impressive 3.4 GPA. An Honor Roll student, Ned was a recipient of the Entrepreneurship Award (he founded and runs his own sailing business) and is a member of the honor band. He is extremely active in community activities, serving as a youth soccer official and also volunteers for Unified Sports and Special Olympics.

"Ned sets a great example as a teammate and as an active member of the school community," said Guilford boys' soccer Head Coach Joe Maher.

A captain of the Indians' girls' soccer squad, Watrous is an exemplary performer in the classroom with a 4.2 GPA. A CAPT Scholar, she is a member of the National and Spanish honor societies and recently won the Smith College Book Award. She also serves as a her class vice president and participated in the symphony orchestra.

"Olivia is a prime example of student-athlete as she is academically focused but always willing to give the extra effort or leadership needed within our soccer program," said Guilford girls' soccer Head Coach Scott McMahon.
