Volleyball Sweeps East Haven in SCC Tourney Opener

The Guilford volleyball team took a 3-1 loss to Hand on Oct. 21 before a 3-0 victory over Hillhouse on Oct. 22 to finish 4-4 in the SCC Hammonasset Division and 12-8 overall for the regular season following its 3-1 win against Griswold on Oct. 23. As the No. 9 seed in the SCC Tournament, the Indians swept No. 8 seed East Haven in the first round on Oct. 25 (25-15, 25-23, 25-18).

Against the Tigers, the Indians won the opening set 25-22, yet dropped the next three (25-14, 25-18, 25-18). Heather Wirth led in kills with 10 to go with her seven blocks while Cia Mirrione added seven kills. For digs, there was plenty to go around for Guilford with Meredith Shank (29), Sam Shank (22), Sarah DeLucia (16), and Eryn Murtagh (12) all contributing.

The Indians next traveled to top seed and defending conference champion Cheshire on Oct. 27 for a quarterfinal matchup. A win there and another in the semifinal round would put Guilford in the conference final on Saturday, Nov. 1 at North Haven at 6 p.m.
