HK Girls' XC State Runner-Up; Football Now at 3-4


Girls' Cross Country

Haddam-Killingworth finished second at the Class SS State Championship on Oct. 25 at Wickham Park with 89 points as Coginchaug took the title with 71 tallies.

Maddie Brandon was the race runner-up (20:07) and was joined by Kelsey D' Amico (10th; 21:12), Annelise Walsh (18th; 21:54), Lexie Bouthillier (25th; 22:14), Erica Allen (34th; 22:41), Lizzie Early (39th; 23:02), and Grace Lindell (46th; 23:15) for a team time of 1:48:08.

Football

HK defeated Nonnewaug 28-18 on Oct. 25 for the Cougars' third straight win as HK is now 3-4.

Alex Segaline threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Czaja with 2:55 remaining to give the Cougars their winning score. Segaline also threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Noah Vinci, had a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown, and kicked two extra points. Josh Breiling had the Cougars' other score on a 1-yard run.

HK came back from an 18-15 halftime deficit to defeat Nonnewaug, which scored three unanswered touchdowns in the first half following the Cougars' opening score.

"The kids are learning how to win games," said Head Coach Mike Baklik. "We let down a bit in the second quarter, but our defense didn't allow a score in the second half, and our offense found a way to get the winning score late in the game. I'm proud of the way the kids responded today."

Girls' Soccer

HK edged East Hampton 1-0 on Oct. 19 at home before a scoreless tie against Morgan on Oct. 21 and a 3-1 victory over Valley on Oct. 24 to cap off the regular season at 11-3-1.

Versus East Hampton, Molly Madore scored unassisted in the first half as the Cougars won the shots battle over the Bellringers 21-19 and Tevi Ferguson had nine saves in the shutout.

In the Morgan draw, the Huskies outshot HK 15-10 and Ferguson made seven saves.

Against Valley, HK was down 1-0 at the break before Madore, Halie Serbent, and Daijah Rich each scored. Jackie Stephens recorded an assist while the Cougars outshot the Warriors 16-11 and Ferguson finished with five saves.

The Cougars earned the No. 3 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and traveled to No. 2 seed Old Lyme on Oct. 29 for a semifinal game. A win there would put HK in the final on Friday, Oct. 31 at Portland against either top-seeded Morgan or No. 4 ranked Coginchaug.

Field Hockey

The Cougars (8-4-0-2) scored a 1-0 victory at home over Old Saybrook on Oct. 21 prior to a 2-1 overtime loss at Westbrook in a game that would have put the defending league champions in the title contest.

In the Rams' matchup, Julie Hausherr notched the game-winner following a Dani Roman assist. Meghan Cerino stopped six shots in net.

Girls' Swimming and Diving

HK had one meet last week and earned a 114-70 win at Rocky Hill on Oct. 24 to improve to 11-1 overall. Victories for the Cougars happened in the 200 medley relay (Caitlyn Von Feldt, Jordan Clemente, Jillian Clemente, Tess Grimaldi), 200 free (Cassie Garrelts), 50 free (Jillian Clemente), 100 butterfly (Jillian Clemente), 100 free (Von Feldt), 500 free (Garrelts), 200 free relay (Marina Parlapiano, Lindsay Nord, Garrelts, Grimaldi), 100 backstroke (Von Feldt), and 400 free relay (Garrelts, Jillian Clemente, Von Feldt, Jordan Clemente).
