Volleyball Splits Two Divisional Games, Beats North Haven


The Guilford volleyball team took two of three contests last week. The Indians swept Law on Oct. 13 before a 3-1 victory over North Haven two days later and a 3-0 loss to Foran on Oct. 16 to sit at 10-7 (3-3 in the SCC Hammonasset Division).

Against Law, Guilford took the match in 25-17, 25-21, and 25-11 sets. Heather Wirth led in kills with seven and also added four blocks on defense, while Cia Mirrione tallied five aces for serving. In the digs' department, Meredith Shank had 24 and Sam Shank dropped in 21. Sammy Carlson also collected 17 assists.

On Oct. 15, North Haven won the first set 25-10, but Guilford rallied and claimed the next three (25-14, 25-14, 25-10). Wirth again was tops for the team in kills with nine, and Carlson fired through six aces. For digs, the Indians had a trio of players in double figures in Meredith Shank (14), along with 13 each from Sarah DeLucia and Sam Shank. Carlson led all helpers thanks to her 16 assists.

The Indians then played Foran strong to the tune of 24-26, 17-25, and 22-25 set scores. Wirth totaled six kills and four blocks, plus Eryn Murtagh tallied three aces. Sam Shank ended with 15 digs and Meredith Shank tacked on 13.
