HK's Brandon Repeats as Shoreline XC Champ; Football Wins Second Straight

Girls' Cross Country

The Cougars finished runner-up with 71 points to Coginchaug (64 points) at the Shoreline Conference Championship on Oct. 17 at Old Saybrook, yet Maddie Brandon won the race in a time of 19:08.50 for her second consecutive conference crown.

"Shorelines were different for me this year compared to last year, because there was a lot more competition," said Brandon. "I think it came down to me focusing on staying in control while still being able to sit back and let the race play out. I felt nervous leading up to the race, but I knew I wanted to win again, and it feels great knowing that I accomplished that goal."

Following Brandon were Kelsey D' Amico (11th; 20:13.30), Annelise Walsh (18th; 20:48.10), Lizzie Early (19th; 20:50.80), Lexie Bouthillier (22nd; 21:12.80), Erica Allen (27th; 21:44.70), and Megan Gamache (29th; 21:45.20), as HK finished with a cumulative team time of 1:42:13.50.

Haddam-Killingworth earned its second-straight win by a 35-0 final at Stafford/East Windsor to improve to 2-4. Josh Breiling scored on touchdown runs of six and 19 yards, while quarterback Alex Segaline scored on a 43-yard run and threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Matt Genovesio. The Cougars did all of their scoring in the first quarter and never looked back. Noah Vinci had the Cougars other touchdown on an 11-yard fumble return, and Alex Segaline was also 5-for-5 on extra-point kicks.

"Breiling and Segaline continued to lead the HK offense, while Omar Omeragic played stellar defense from his safety position with a number of tackles and an interception, after which he reeled off a 45-yard return," said Head Coach Mike Baklik. "We took another step forward tonight. Our offensive attack was balanced and we were able to pick up the defense with the shutout and a defensive score."

HK split a pair of matchups to move to 7-4-0-1.

On Oct. 13, the team hosted Valley Regional and the Cougars prevailed 2-0. Both goals were scored in the first half, as Danni Roman and Julie Hausherr netted goals with Julia Babbitt and Brinley Anderson garnering assists. Meghan Cerino stopped all three of the Warriors' shots on goal.

Two days later, HK traveled to Canton for a non-conference tilt and the hosts took a 1-0 lead into halftime before a 2-1 Cougars' loss. Defender Kolby Burger stifled a Canton shot on the goal line early in the game to keep HK within striking distance. Midway through the second half, Anderson beat the Canton keeper to knot the score at 1. The Cougars dominated second-half time of possession, but with just over 90 seconds to play, a Warriors' breakaway goal dealt HK a last-minute defeat.
