Volleyball Wins Three Straight; Now in States


The Guilford volleyball team took three straight contests last week to sit at 8-6 overall and earn itself a bid to the state tournament by virtue of its eighth victory. First on Oct. 6, the Indians swept Mercy before a 3-2 victory over Lauralton Hall two days later and another sweep against Shelton on Oct. 10.

Facing Mercy, Guilford prevailed (25-19, 26-24, 25-22). Heather Wirth led the attacking front with 10 kills and chipped in five blocks on defense. Meredith Shank led the digs category with 19. Eryn Murtagh also fired through three aces and Sammy Carlson was the leading helper with 15 assists.

Battling Lauralton Hall, the Indians went the distance, dropping the second (23-25) and third (12-25) sets, although they took the other three (26-24, 25-9, 15-11). This time, Cia Mirrione led in kills with eight while Wirth and Meredith Shank each added in seven. On serves, Carlson totaled five aces and 18 assists and, defensively, Wirth blocked four balls; Meredith Shank had 24 digs; and Sam Shank tallied 14 digs.

The game scores read 25-22, 25-13, and 25-14 in the Shelton sweep. Meredith Shank finished with 11 kills and 30 digs, plus Murtagh dropped in a dozen digs. Carlson also dished out 20 assists.
