HK Football Gets First Win of Baklik Era over Lewis Mills

Running back Josh Breiling scored all four Cougar touchdowns as HK defeated Lewis Mills 27-13 on Oct. 11 to give Head Coach Mike Baklik his first victory with the Cougars.

The Haddam-Killingworth football team ushered in a new administration to its program this fall in first-year Head Coach Mike Baklik and five games into his term; he has a win on the record.

HK traveled to Muzzy Field in Bristol on Oct. 11 and scored its first win of the year by a 27-13 final over Lewis Mills to improve to 1-4 and give Baklik his first victory at HK while also ending the Cougars’ 17-game losing streak. Josh Breiling rushed for 94 yards on 15 carries and scored all four of his team’s touchdowns. Quarterback Alex Segaline rushed for 52 yards on 13 carries, was 5-for-12 throwing, and passed for 102 yards, including a 50-yard strike to Breiling.

Both teams failed on early scoring opportunities, going 1st-and-goal on their first possession but failing to score. The teams traded scores until the fourth quarter when the Cougars broke a 13-13 tie with the 50-yard TD strike from Segaline to Breiling. HK sealed the victory with Breiling’s fourth TD of the game, a 2-yard run with 5:17 remaining.

“We played a complete game tonight,” said Baklik, whose team finished with 294 yards of total offense as 192 of them came via the running game. “Josh Breiling, in particular, played well—especially on his touchdown reception which came off a deflection. He was hustling toward the ball to block for the receiver, and that hustle put him in the perfect position to catch the deflection and go into the end zone untouched.”

The Cougars now look to grab win No. 2 on Friday, Oct. 17 when they travel to play Stafford/East Windsor (0-5) for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff at Stafford.
