Both HK XC Squads Win Cougar Invite; Field Hockey Blanks Morgan


Cross Country

On Sept. 30, Haddam-Killingworth took part in the Cougar Invite at North Branford. The boys won the event with 39 points while the girls also took first thanks to their 43 points.

Scoring on the boys' side were Pat Fitzgibbons (4th; 17:59.94), David Baird (6th; 18:06.76), Gavin Manzi (8th; 18:19.05), Mike Rutledge (9th; 18:19.59), and Randin Manzi (12th; 18:31.15). Point placers for the girls were Kelsey D' Amico (4th; 21:08.71), Maddie Brandon (5th; 21:08.96), Lexie Bouthillier (8th; 21:54.98), Lizzie Early (12th; 22:21.74), and Grace Lindell (14th; 22:38.74).

The weekend prior, HK traveled to East Greenwich, Rhode Island to compete in the Ocean State Invitational on Sept. 27 in a meet that featured over 90 high schools from the East Coast.

Both teams had successful days and were led by a fifth-place team finish in the boys' race. The boys scored 192 points to place fifth out of 41 teams. Leading the way once again was Fitzgibbons, who placed 18th in a time of 17:23. Finishing behind him were Rutledge (36th; 17:57), Baird (41st; 18:05), Gavin Manzi (48th; 18:14), and Randin Manzi (57th; 18:28). The girls' squad also fared well as it placed ninth out of 30. First to finish for HK was Brandon, who covered the 3.1-mile course in a time of 20:19 to place 12th out of 217 runners. Rounding out the top five scores were Annelise Walsh (59th; 22:15), Erica Allen (87th; 22:58), Megan Gamache (90th; 23:09), and Early (99th; 23:28).

Previous to that on Sept. 23, the Cougars headed to Cromwell to compete in the Shoreline Conference Large School League Meet against Morgan, Valley Regional, Coginchaug, Cromwell, and North Branford. The boys' squad came away with five victories to start its dual-meet record at 5-0 while the girls' team went 4-1, narrowly losing a tight race with Coginchaug, which came in ranked 11th in the entire state.

The boys beat Coginchaug (20-43), Morgan (20-43), North Branford (15-50), Valley (15-49), and Cromwell (21-39). The Cougars were led by Fitzgibbons, Baird, and Gavin Manzi, who crossed the finish line together with a time of 17:36 for the 3.1-mile course and placed fourth, fifth, and sixth overall in the race. Following the trio were Randin Manzi (7th; 17:42) and Rob Tischbein (9th; 17:53) to round out the scoring.

The girls lost to Coginchaug 27-30, but easily beat Cromwell (23-36), North Branford (15-50), Morgan (15-50), and Valley (19-42). HK was paced by Brandon, taking the race in a time of 19:07 for the 5,000-meter course. She was followed by D'Amico (4th; 20:32), Bouthillier (6th; 20:39), and Lindell (15th; 21:24), and Early (16th; 21:33).

Field Hockey

HK split a pair of Shoreline Conference contests to close out the first half of the regular season with a 5-2-0-1 record. The team traveled to Clinton on Oct. 2 and came away with a 3-0 victory over Morgan. Kolby Burger struck first for the Cougars, followed by two goals from Katie Hausherr. Julie Hausherr notched two assists on the night while Julia Babbitt had one. The HK defensive unit held strong as the Huskies failed to attempt one shot for the contest. The next day, the Cougars hosted Westbrook and the Knights' early first half goal held up as HK fell 1-0. Netminder Meghan Cerino turned aside four Westbrook shots. Despite the conference loss, HK currently sits atop the Shoreline standings with a league mark of 4-1. The squad dedicated this past week's games to the "Play for the Cure" cause for breast cancer awareness. The players wore bright pink socks and ribbons and a pink game ball was used.

Girls' Soccer

On Sept. 30, HK (7-2) suffered its first loss of the year in a 1-0 final at Old Saybrook before a 1-0 defeat to Morgan on Oct. 3. The Rams scored the game-winning goal at the 78:52 mark of the contest while both sides were even in the shots at 15 with Tevi Ferguson stopping nine of them. Battling Morgan, the Huskies scored the contest's lone tally in the second half and again the Cougars matched their opponent in shots on goal with 11 from each side. Ferguson had eight saves in the matchup.

Football

The Cougars (0-4) lost to Hyde 38-14 at home on Oct. 3. Hunter Czaja caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Alex Segaline and Czaja now has a TD reception in each contest this year while Josh Breiling rushed for the other TD. Hyde jumped out to 20-7 halftime lead, but the Cougars were able to close it down to 20-14 in the third quarter before Hyde pulled away in the final stanza.

Girls' Swimming and Diving

The Cougars defeated Holy Cross 91-69 on Sept. 30 before a 94-89 victory against Mercy on Oct. 3 to improve to 6-1.

Against Holy Cross, HK finished tops in every event except the 200 and 100 free and 100 breaststroke. The victories came in the 200 medley relay (Caitlyn Von Feldt, Jordan Clemente, Jillian Clemente, Tess Grimaldi), 200 IM (Von Feldt), 50 free (Grimaldi), 100 butterfly (Jillian Clemente), 500 free (Garrelts), 200 free relay (Garrelts, Jordan Clemente, Marina Parlapiano, Grimaldi), 100 backstroke (Von Feldt), 100 breaststroke (Jordan Clemente), and 400 free relay (Garrelts, Jillian Clemente, Lindsay Nord, Parlapiano).

In the Mercy meet, first-place finishes for HK came by way of the 200 medley relay (Von Feldt, Jordan Clemente, Jillian Clemente, Grimaldi), 200 free (Garrelts), 200 IM (Von Feldt), 50 free (Tess Grimaldi), 100 butterfly (Jillian Clemente), 500 free (Garrelts), 200 free relay (Garrelts, Jordan Clemente, Parlapiano, Grimaldi), 100 backstroke (Von Feldt), 100 breaststroke (Jordan Clemente), and 400 free relay (Garrelts, Jillian Clemente, Von Feldt, Parlapiano).
