The Cougars hosted Coginchaug on Sept. 26 and took a 28-14 loss. Nate DeRita and Hunter Czaja caught touchdown passes of 12 and 46 yards, respectively, from Alex Segaline for HK (0-3) First-year player Czaja now has one touchdown reception in each of the Cougars' first three games.

Both sides traded touchdowns throughout the game with the score tied after each of the first three quarters, although Coginchaug pulled away in the final quarter with two unanswered TDs.

"Two-way lineman Morgan Smith and linebacker Omar Omeragic played well in their first varsity starts of the season," said Head Coach Mike Baklik. "We're continuing to make progress. This was our best effort of the year so far, but we need to play hard for four quarters. The final quarter was the difference in the game tonight."

Field Hockey

The Cougars traveled to rival North Branford on Sept. 22 and emerged victorious in overtime by a 3-2 final prior to shutting out non-conference foe Mercy 4-0 two days later at home to sit at 4-1-0-1.

In the North Branford overtime victory, the Thunderbirds took a slim 1-0 lead well into the second half, when HK evened the score on a Brinley Anderson goal that was assisted by Sammy Turowsky. The Cougars offense struck again a mere three minutes later when Katie Hausherr sent a Dani Roman feed into the back of the cage for a 2-1 HK lead with 16:30 left in the contest. North Branford then tied the score late in regulation to force the 7-on-7 overtime tilt. With six minutes remaining in the extra session, Anderson drove past two T-Birds defenders and beat their keeper for the game-winning strike. Meghan Cerino stopped four shots on the night.

Facing Mercy, Julia Babbitt netted two first-half goals while Jamie Little and Katie Hausherr each scored in the second half. Garnering assists on the afternoon were Roman, Julie Hausherr, and Hannah Theriault. Cerino stopped the lone shot she faced.

Girls' Swimming and Diving

The Cougars scored a 90-78 victory on Sept. 23 before a 93-82 decision against Lyman Hall on Sept. 26 to up its record to 4-1. HK captured event victories in the 200 medley relay (Caitlyn Von Feldt, Jordan Clemente, Jillian Clemente, Tess Grimaldi), 200 free (Garrelts), 200 IM (Jordan Clemente), 50 free (Grimaldi), 100 butterfly (Jillian Clemente), 100 free (Von Feldt), 500 free (Garrelts), 100 backstroke (Von Feldt), and 400 free relay (Garrelts, Jillian Clemente, Jordan Clemente, Von Feldt).

Watertown kept the meet close, trailing by as few as two points at one time during the meet. HK was up by 10 going into the final relay, needing a first- or second-place finish to win, and the team of Garrelts, Clemente, Clemente, and Von Feldt came through by finishing with its best time this season.

Clara Roby (200 free), Sarah Cook (200 IM, 100 backstroke), Marina Parlapiano (50 and 100 free), Jillian Clemente (100 butterfly, 500 free), Von Feldt (100 free), Garrelts (200 and 500 free), Nora Homicki (100 backstroke), and Jordan Clemente (100 breaststroke) all put forth season-best times.

"It was nice to see the team clicking so well. Times are consistently improving and the girls are determined to go out and put everything they have into each race," said Head Coach Peter Ettlinger. "It is exciting to think about the potential growth as the season progresses."

In the Lyman Hall meet, HK had 21 top-three finishes and came in first for every event except diving. Victories included the 200 medley relay (Von Feldt, Jordan Clemente, Jillian Clemente, Grimaldi), 200 free (Garrelts), 200 IM (Jordan Clemente), 50 free (Grimaldi), 100 butterfly (Jillian Clemente), 100 free (Von Feldt), 500 free (Garrelts), 200 free relay (Garrelts, Lindsay Nord, Parlapiano, Grimaldi), 100 backstroke (Von Feldt), 100 breaststroke (Jordan Clemente), and 400 free relay (Garrelts, Jillian Clemente, Jordan Clemente, Von Feldt).

The Cougars held a comfortable 12-point lead going into diving, which shrunk to two at its conclusion. The girls rallied and did not look back, creating a cushion that allowed them to swim exhibition for the 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay. Parlapiano put up a personal-best time in the 100 free, as did Izzy Brown in the 500 free. Jordan Clemente also swam to season-best marks in the breaststroke and IM.

"Times continue to drop for most swimmers. I switched some things around, but most swimmers are starting to own their events and improve with each meet," said Ettlinger. "Particularly of note, Nora Homicki swam her third different individual event today, as well as two relays, earning points with every swim."
