Hand Girls' Volleyball 2-0; Boys' Soccer Ties Twice


Girls' Volleyball

The Tigers scored a 3-1 victory over Amity on Sept. 9. Hand dropped the first set, 25-27, yet rebounded with 25-19, 25-21, and 25-23 decisions for the win. Kennedy Hye had 28 digs; Krissy LaSance added 25 assists; Cassidy Wygonik tacked on 15 kills; plus Ryann Corniello came through with five kills and five blocks. Hand then swept Hamden on Sept. 12 to start the season at 2-0.

Boys' Soccer

Hand opened the season at home on Sept. 9 with a 1-1 tie against Notre Dame-West Haven before the same result against defending SCC-champion Xavier on Sept. 11 to sit at 0-0-2.

Hosting NDWH, the Green Knights scored on a penalty kick before the Tigers evened the score 10 minutes later when Cole McArdle set up Ian Bergere for the equalizer. In the Xavier clash, Alex Cinicolo scored in the first half before the Falcons tied it with 10 minutes to play.

Girls' Soccer

The Tigers shut out Branford 2-0 on Sept. 9 before battling to a scoreless draw with Sacred Heart Academy on Sept. 12 to sit at 1-0-1 after their first week of action.

Against the Hornets, Taylor Scully crossed a ball from out wide, and then Julie Thompson came in from the far post, trapped the ball, took a touch away from the keeper, and put the ball in on the near post to give Hand a 1-0 lead in the first half. Amy Boswell made a diving save towards the latter part of the first half. In the second half, Emily Ashman served a ball into the box before Sam Mayhew pounced on a loose ball, and penetrated towards the net. Even though she was knocked down, her extra effort to get up allowed her to get the shot off and beat the goalkeeper on her strike.

Facing SHA, Boswell made several good saves, including one within the six-yard box. Hand had chances to score, but its attempts either went wide or over the goal.

Field Hockey

The Tigers (2-0) began their campaign with a 5-2 home victory over Lauralton Hall on Sept. 10. Hand took a 2-1 lead at the half thanks to goals at 20:14 by Carly Ruberti and then at 6:11 from Erin Mammele, as Mammele and Sam Pavano assisted on the tallies. At the 22:07 juncture of the second, Hannah Leckey added to the Tigers' lead on a penalty stroke before she later scored unassisted with 9:15 to play. Ruberti then closed out the night by netting her second score with 67 seconds left. In net, Mel Rennie stopped 12 of the Crusaders' 14 shots, while Hand had 16 shots on goal.

Hosting Guilford on Sept. 13 in a 4-0 win, Sam Pavano and Leckey scored, while Kacey McCarthy had a pair of goals. Pavano, Leckey, and Ruberti all recorded assists. Rennie stopped one Guilford shot, and Kylie Gargiulo made two saves also, as the Tigers had 14 shots on net.
