Field Hockey Looks to Mature Throughout the Year

Junior midfielder Isabelle Risse and the Guilford field hockey team are a much younger team than the one that earned 13 victories a year ago, but the Indians look to continuously improve as the season wears on.

Head Coach Kitty Palmer begins her 33rd campaign with the Guilford field hockey team following a 13-6-1 campaign that saw the Indians reach the SCC Tournament and earn a bid into the quarterfinals of the Class M State Tournament.

Palmer stated that her squad doesn't return too much varsity experience, though Guilford will be led by co-captains Mackenzie Cattaruzza and Sarah Russell, as Cattaruzza was sixth in the conference in scoring last fall. In net, the Indians welcome back junior Brooke Misbach, who recorded 10 shutouts a year ago, alongside junior midfielders Sami Clayton and Isabelle Risse; junior Abby Miranker on defense; senior defender Anna Strait; plus sophomore Teddi Stanley in the midfield.

"With only three players with much varsity experience, we hope to improve as a team as the season progresses, and be playing our best hockey at the end of the season," said Palmer, who is assisted by JV Coach, Kiernan Kelley and Freshmen Coach, Jaclyn Matthieu. "We are in a very competitive SCC league with Cheshire, Hand, Branford, and Lauralton Hall as very tough games."
