Madison 16-U Falls in Playoffs; Finishes Year at .500

The Madison 16-U baseball team took a 5-0 loss to the Westport Wreckers on August 3 in a single-elimination round of the AAU 16-U Local Wood Bat League playoffs.

Evan Lohn threw close to 100 pitches, as the 4th-seeded Tigers were looking at a 1-0 deficit going into the fourth inning against No.5-ranked Westport. Head Coach Pat Talbot added that his squad did its job of making contact, but the Tigers couldn't bring anyone across the dish.

"Evan's curveball was his out pitch and did a great job throwing it for strikes and keeping hitters off balanced," said Talbot. "Offensively, we couldn't seem to get the bats firing this afternoon. They weren't missing the baseball, but they were just not hitting it on the screws with many pop ups to infielders. Typically we do a good job driving the baseball on a line. We did draw walks, but left men stranded on base."

The week prior at Madison on July 27, the same two clubs split a doubleheader to determine the postseason seeding with the Wreckers taking the opener, 10-1, prior to the Tigers storming back thanks to a 9-7 victory.

Lohn got the win for the second contest by throwing yet another complete game, and Madison's entire lineup contributed to that win. The extra base hits from EJ Mastronardi, Robby Bodiere, and Kyle Kuhn with men on base forced runs to come across to seal the deal on the win and lead the Tigers to a final mark of 10-10-1.

The Tigers' skipper expressed that, considering the older competition his team faced throughout the summer, the dead even record is something to hold with great pride.

".500 baseball is great, especially with the intertwined AAU competition we played," said Talbot. "The majority of our roster is 15 years old. The AAU teams hand select players from surrounding towns, and the players we competed against in the 16-U were all 16 and turning 17."
