Morgan Golf Had Double the Success in 2014

Gabe Van Ness collected a slew of honors while helping Morgan golf win the Division IV state title this spring.

After the 2013 campaign ended, Morgan golf Coach Eric Bergman could hardly imagine duplicating the kind of success his Huskies had after winning both the Shoreline and state titles. But imagination turned into reality for Morgan again this spring as the Huskies finished with a 24-2 record and as Shoreline Conference and Division IV champions, the latter of which they won in dramatic fashion in a three-hole tiebreaker over Northwest Catholic.

"Again, as I've said throughout the season, these kids are not just accomplished junior golfers, but more importantly, they are gentlemen who represent at the highest levels the most important values of student athletes: honesty, courtesy, character, and perseverance," said Coach Bergman.

Leading this distinguished squad were captains Gabe Van Ness and Maxx Bugg. Van Ness, the Huskies' only senior, leaves behind a brilliant legacy for Morgan golf.

"Coming to us after an 0-20 season his freshman year, Gabe is a major factor in turning the program around in his four years," said Bergman of Van Ness, who earned First Team All-Shoreline and All-State honors, along with New Haven Register All-Area. "His name will always be associated with any success we achieve after his departure. We are very proud of this young man."

Bugg, a junior, was match medalist a countless number of times this spring and was also named First Team All-Shoreline, All-State, and New Haven Register All-Area.

Teammate Kevin Daley, a sophomore, was additionally named Second Team All-Shoreline and will be a co-captain with Maxx Bugg next spring. Freshmen Burton Caldwell and Jack Bugg were also instrumental to the Huskies' success and Bergman named all five of his golfers team MVPs.

Though a huge hole will be left by Van Ness's departure, Morgan will work toward defending both of its titles once again next spring.

"After finishing in a tie at 320 with Northwest Catholic and having to compete in a three-hole playoff, both Gabe and Maxx looked at me and said, 'Coach, we got this. This is what it's all about.' They went out and wished their competitors good luck and then got down to business and won the state championship," said Bergman. "Their impact on the younger student-athletes in this community is immense. Coach [Paul] Beckett and I are proud to be a part of this team and watching these kids develop into fine young men. Thanks to PGA Professional Sean Busca and the members of Clinton Country Club. Also thanks to the AD's office, the Morgan community in general, the Board of Education, and the superintendent. And a special thanks to the parents who have raised young men we all can be quite proud of."
