Golf Swung Its Best at the State Tourney Level

Senior co-captain Trent Kaisen was fourth on the Guilford golf team in squad scoring average to help the Indians have a strong state tournament despite not qualifying for the SCC Tournament.

It didn't get the opportunity for a conference title, but Guilford golf certainly made the most of its time with each occasion it stepped onto a course.

Art Fonicello's squad, which finished 5-11 in regular-season action playing in Division I Tier 2 of the newly-realigned SCC, split its goals for the spring by qualifying for the Division II State Championship (finishing 9th out of 20 squads), although the Indians didn't reach the SCC Championship as an entire unit.

Guilford had a pair of captains in Trent Kaisen and Sienna Fucci. Kaisen was fourth on the club in terms of team scoring average and right behind him was Fucci in fifth. Additional senior experience and leadership came by way of team scoring average-leader Jamie Webb and Jeff Tucker, who was seventh in scoring.

Fucci was named the team MVP, as she earned All-State honors following her round of 84 at the Girls' State Championship on June 10. Fonicello added that the main feat of the campaign was, "beating our seed and finishing ninth in Division II State Tournament."

Looking ahead to 2015 on the links, Guilford returns a trio of sophomore starters, who are Ethan Bedell (2nd on team in scoring average), Aiden Kellaher (shooting a 77 in the state tournament), and Ben Fazzina (6th in scoring for the Indians). Still, Fonicello was very proud of how his group finished off its work and put an exclamation point on this season with strong state showings.

"It was a great girls' state tournament for Sienna and a great boys' state tournament for the team," said Fonicello. "It is always great to see the team at its best at the end of the season."
