Moskey Throws Perfect Game for HK Baseball; Pfrommer Long Jump Champ

Baseball

11th-seeded HK began the Class M State Tournament with a 10-0 first-round shutout of No. 22 Ellis Tech on June 2 at home behind a perfect-game, 19-strikeout performance from Brian Moskey. The next day at No. 6 Weston, the Cougars advanced with a 9-6 win before HK shutout No. 14 East Catholic 6-0 on June 6 to reach the semifinal round.

"The first innings are the most important, because you have to get that energy up, and I had three strikeouts in the first and everything was just working," said Moskey, who threw only 78 pitches with just 14 of them being balls. "My location was on point, and I just felt in the zone. Today, the only two outs that weren't strikeouts were bunts, so you have to have that defense behind you and confidence in it. I just tried to locate my pitches and for 21 outs, it worked out."

In the perfect game for Moskey, the Cougars got on the board in the first, scoring two runs on three hits, two walks, and a hit batter and that was all Moskey needed for HK. Luigi Fazzino had three hits and Tyler Popp had two hits for HK.

Versus Weston, HK rallied for five runs in the seventh to stop Weston. The HK rally took advantage of three walks, two errors, and a two-run single by Tom Kostek. Kostek, Popp, and Joe Aitken each had two hits to lead the Cougars.

Hosting East Catholic, Moskey threw a two-hit shutout, striking out seven to give the Cougars a win. Griffin Bremer had two hits and three RBIs, while Ty Schuler drove in two with a pair of hits as well.

The Cougars then played No. 2 Plainfield on June 10 in the semifinals, and a win there would put HK in the final, slated for either Friday, June 13 or Saturday, June 14 at Palmer Field in Middletown.

Girls' Outdoor Track

Haddam-Killingworth finished seventh with 35 points at the Class M State Championship on June 2 at Sheehan, as Leah Pfrommer captured the long jump title (17-0) before finishing runner-up for the triple jump (34-111/ 2).

"I wasn't seeded first in the jumps, but I was expecting a win in the long and triple," said Pfrommer. "I went into the long thinking, 'Just do what you know you can do,' and I ended up jumping 17 feet, which isn't my best, but I'm hoping for a much longer jump in the State Open. Triple jump was a bit of a bummer, because I held first through the prelims and finals until the last jump. The girl before me had an awesome jump, and I just couldn't reach it. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with my performances under the conditions of my season, and I'm hoping to rest up and be ready for opens."

Also scoring for the Cougars were Anaka Maher (6th, 99-0 in javelin; 6th, 30-51/ 2 for shot put), Sarah Smith (7th; 30-11/ 2 with shot put), Adrienne Schultz (6th; 8-6 in pole vault), Maddie Brandon (4th; 5:32.51 with the 1,600), and Pfrommer (8th; 13.41 in the 100).

Boys' Outdoor Track

The Cougars were 10th with 30 tallies at the Class M State Championship on June 2 at Middletown. Producing points for HK was the 4x100 relay squad of Canute Watson, Christian Ticino, Nicholas Afragola, and John Schuster (3rd; 44.70); plus Watson (3rd for both the 100 and 200 with times of 11.33 and 23.10, respectively), Ethan Kovach (6th, 23.49 in the 200; 4th, 50.44 for the 400), and Pat Fitzgibbons (5th; 10:05.87 in the 3,200).

Softball

19th-seeded HK shut out No. 14 Holy Cross 6-0 in the first round of the Class M State Tournament on June 2, and the next day at No. 3 St. Joseph's, the Cougars dropped a 9-1 decision to finish 16-9 overall.

Golf

HK finished seventh by shooting a 379 for the Shoreline Conference Championship on June 4 at Alling Memorial Golf Course. Leading the way for the Cougars were John Abbott and Alex Segaline (both with a 79).
