Tigers' Track Wins Three Relays at SCC Sectionals


Girls' Outdoor Track

The Tigers were at the SCC Eastern Sectional Championship at Amity on May 19, as they finished in third with 103 points-only 9.85 points behind host and winner Amity.

Winning for Hand on the afternoon were Kathryn Phillips in the 800 (2:25.27); the 4x100 relay of Justine Griffin, Hailey Raudat, Molly Citrin, and Sam Schaefer (49.88); and the 4x400 quartet of Lauren Brady, Griffin, Citrin, and Phillips (4:07.91).

Other standout showings came from Schaefer and Raudat (3rd; 12.81 and 4th; 13.04 for the 100, respectively); Schaefer and Griffin in the 200 (3rd; 26.38 and 4th; 27.05, respectively); Citrin with the 400 (3rd, 1:01.26); Megan Phillips (3rd, 2:30.66), Jane Butler (4th, 2:30.67), and Chloe Moulin (9th, 2:37.80) for the 800; the runner-up 4x800 relay team of Butler, Emily Shafer, Megan Phillips, and Kathryn Phillips (10:03.88); Lindsay Nichols (2nd, 4-8) and Natalie Baughan (10th, 4-4) in the high jump; Julie Keenan (3rd, 9-0 for pole vault); and Baughan (5th, 15-7½ for long jump; 5th, 32½ in triple jump).

Boys' Outdoor Track

Hand took part in the SCC Eastern Sectional Championship on May 19 at Amity and came in sixth with 66.5 points.

Taking events for the Tigers were the 4x800 relay squad of Noel Haren, Connor Favre, Mike Gentile, and Adam Taylor (8:19.43); plus Ian Bergere (12-0 for pole vault).

Additional big performances came by way of Tommy Wilson (4th, 11.57) and Mike Gilchrist (8th, 11.97) in the 100; Gentile (2nd, 51.10) and Max Veth (5th, 52.44) with the 400; Griffin McShane (10th, 45.11) for the 300 hurdles; the 4x100 team of Wilson, Gilchrist, Scott Sweitzer, and Veth (6th, 45.40); the 4x400 grouping of Haren, Taylor, Veth, and Nick Balow (5th, 3:37.30); Rich Sangster (3rd, 11-6), Hunter Stokes (5th, 11-6), Kyle Boling (7th, 11-6), and Josh Riccio (9th, 11-0) for the pole vault; Malcomb Watts (10th, 18-6) with the long jump; and finally Dan Healey (3rd, 41-7) during the triple jump.

Girls' Golf

On May 12, the Tigers defeated Sacred Heart 184-206 before a 185-200 loss to Avon the next day while also defeating Suffield/East Granby (225) that day. The Tigers did rebound, though, by besting East Lyme (199-261) on May 14, and then SHA again by a 200-217 margin on May 15. The following week, the Tigers secured 188-195 and 209-217 wins both over Mercy on May 19 and 20, respectively, and then a 208-240 triumph against Canton on May 21 to bump their mark up to 13-1.

In the first SHA match at home, Gabby Martin piloted the way with a solid 39 as medalist, followed by a nice performance from Erin Schroeder (45), along with Caroline Gabriele (50), Kelsey Anderson (50), and Morgan Werth completing her round shooting a 55.

In the Avon contest, Avon proved victorious with a solid score of 185, while Hand was led once again by medalist Martin (40), Schroeder (50), Gabriele (54), and Anderson (56). Against East Lyme, Martin was again medalist with a 46 followed by Emily Schroeder (49), Anderson (51), and Erin Schroeder (53).

Hand's final matchup of the week was hosted by SHA at the Laurel View Country Club in Hamden, and the Tigers prevailed, led by Martin's 41 as medalist, plus Erin Schroeder (48), Anderson (55), and Abby Nugent (56).

Boys' Golf

Hand etched a 141-153 win against Cheshire on May 19 before a tight 161-163 loss to Fairfield Prep the next day to conclude the regular season 11-3-2 before the SCC Championship that took place on May 27.

At home versus Cheshire, Brian Carlson was the medalist with a 34, followed by Sam Jablonski (35), and Tommy Pellatt and Todd McAndrews with 36s, as the Tigers notched their season-low team score and matched the program's lowest score over the past six campaigns.

On the road battling Fairfield Prep, Pellatt was medalist with a 37. Justin Freund had a 41, Carlson a 42, plus McAndrews and Jablonski each shot a 44.

Baseball

Hand improved to 10-9 after wins of 9-0 over Shelton on May 20 and 6-3 against Lyman Hall on May 21 for Senior Day following an 8-3 loss to Cheshire on May 19.

Scott Braren, Reed Smith, and Jack Pancak all had two hits for the Tigers in the lone loss. Against Shelton, Brian Anderson threw a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts. Danny Gardner had three hits and three RBIs for Hand. Ray Miklos and Pancak also added two hits for Hand, while Braren had a two-RBI double. Hosting Lyman Hall, Miklos had two hits and two RBIs; Smith had two doubles and two RBIs, plus Pancak had two hits and two RBIs, and Braren had an RBI triple.
