Hand Girls' Tennis Stays Unbeaten; Girls' Lax Rolling


Girls' Tennis

Hand had two nice wins last week over Shelton, 7-0, and Guilford, 4-3, to sit at a perfect 10-0 on the spring. Both opponents tested the Tigers' No. 1 doubles team of Gabby Diotalevi and Megan Sosensky. In both matches, Hand's top tandem won three-set matches. At Guilford, Sosensky and Diotalevi won the deciding point to clinch Hand's 4-3 win. Other wins over Guilford were Ankita Roychoudhury, Sheila Flaherty, Erin Hart, Ryann Corniello, and Sabrina Colonese-DiBello in doubles. At Shelton, Ana Gross, Meghan Hart, Clara Wang, and Roychoudhury won their singles matches. Doubles duels were won by Diotalevi and Sosensky, Hart and Grace Cummings, and Corniello and Colonese-DiBello.

Girls' Lacrosse

Hand stormed past Mercy on May 5 for a 17-8 victory before a 15-6 victory on May 8 at Amity, and then the Tigers defeated Haddam-Killingworth by a 19-6 final on May 10 to move their mark to a strong 9-2.

Against Mercy, the Tigers got six goals each from Erin Mammele and Lauren Cole, along with four assists from Brooke Barry. Emilee Wargo collected 18 saves in net. Mercy got an early lead and Hand then came back, slowly pulling away from Mercy throughout the second half. Facing Amity, Cole notched eight goals, and Barry had eight helpers against HK.

Baseball

The Tigers scored a pair of victories, first over Guilford by an 11-10 final on May 4 prior to an 8-6 decision over Foran the next day. Hand is now 6-7 (3-2 SCC Hammonasset Division) and has won three straight.

For Hand facing Guilford, Jack Kallinich had three hits and three RBIs with two doubles, plus Drew Harmon had two hits, including a double and two RBIs; Ray Miklos was 3-for-3 with a double. Harmon started for Hand and pitched five strong innings for his second win. Hand dominated most of the game and had an 11-3 lead going to the bottom of the seventh. Guilford for rallied in the final inning, but Reed Smith was able to close the game and get the save for Hand.

Against Foran, Gardner had three hits and three RBIs, Scott Braren had two hits and an RBI, and Blake Egan had two hits, including two doubles and an RBI. This was a back-and-forth game, as Foran tied the game at five in the fifth inning, but Hand took the lead right back and never gave it up.

Boys' Golf

The Tigers won three straight against Notre Dame-West Haven (144-153) on May 5; North Haven (168-183) on May 6; and Guilford (149-161) on May 7 to improve to 8-1-1.

Facing ND-WH, Justin Freund was medalist with a 34, Brian Carlson had a 36, while Tommy Pellatt and Phillip Crampton both had a 37.

Traveling to Wallingford to face North Haven, Carlson was medal man with a 39. Pellatt added a 40, Freund had a 43, and Mike O'Sullivan rounded out the scoring with a 45.

Battling Guilford, Freund was medalist again with a 35. Pellatt was one behind that with a 36 while Todd McAndrews and Carlson added 39s.
