Baseball

Hand broke the bats out early on Opening Day with a 22-1 win over Cross at home on April 9 prior to a 7-5 loss at Greenwich on April 10. The Tigers then capped the week with a 9-8, walk-off victory over Guilford on April 12 at home to bring their mark to 2-1 (1-0 in SCC Hammonasset Division).

Hosting Cross, Reed Smith pitched six innings, allowed three hits, one run, and struck out 11 batters. Scott Braren was 5-for-5 with two home runs, a double, and seven RBIs. Ray Miklos was also 5-for-5 with four doubles and three RBI while Smith went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBI. Danny Gardner was 3-for-3, plus an RBI, and Drew Harmon added two hits for the Tigers. Hand's No. 2, 3, and 4 hitters went a combined 14-for-15 with ten extra base hits and ten RBI.

The following day, Joe Hill pitched a strong six frames for Hand and only gave up two earned runs. Smith went 2-for-3, including a two-run double. Jack Pancak and Harmon both added RBI singles for Hand.

Greenwich jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first and Hand tied it in the second on a Pancak RBI single to left field. In the top of the fifth, Hand trailed 3-2 and Smith clobbered a two-out, two-run double to deep right field to give Hand a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Greenwich tied the game at 4 before it connected for a three-run homer to make it 7-4. Hand rallied late with Harmon getting an RBI single in the seventh, although Hand stranded runners on second and third to end the game.

Against Guilford, Smith was 3-for-4 with a two-RBI double and Braren was 2-for-3 and also had a two-RBI double. Miklos was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a double while Harmon had a three-RBI double and Pancak tallied the game-winning RBI single.

Guilford jumped out to a 5-1 lead against Hand's starting pitcher, Brian Anderson. In the fifth inning, Hand came back to tie up the game as Smith hit a two-run double to even the score at 5. Guilford scored three more in sixth and seventh innings off Harmon to take an 8-5 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Miklos singled, Braren walked, and Smith singled to load the bases with no one out. Harmon was the next hitter and crushed a bases-clearing double to dead center field to tie the game at eight before Pancak followed that with a walk-off, line-drive single to left field to secure the win for the Tigers.

Girls' Tennis

The Tigers started the season 2-0 after a 7-0 win over Foran on April 9 before a 5-2 decision over North Haven the next day.

Multiple wins for the week came from Clara Wang and Ankita Roychoudhury at singles; plus Gabby Diotalevi, Megan Sosensky, Erin Hart, Sheila Flaherty, Ryann Corniello, and Sabrina Colonese-DiBello at doubles. Ana Grosso and Meghan Hart also bested Foran at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots.

Boys' Outdoor Track

The Tigers traveled to Guilford for a tri-meet against Guilford and Notre Dame-West Haven on April 9 and Hand earned a sweep to start the season 2-0 (1-0 in SCC Hammonasset Division).

Hand's performances included Ian Bergere (18.33 in 110 hurdles), Tommy Wilson (11.33 for the 100; 24.38 in the 200), Hunter Stokes (143-11 throw with the javelin), Nick Balow (53.3 for the 400), Adam Taylor (2:13.00 in the 800), Ben Reul (5-6 for the high jump), Scott Sweitzer (44.59 in the 300 hurdles), and the 4x400 relay squad (3:48.00).

Boys' Golf

Hand began the campaign with a 159-161 win over Amity on April 9 before a 148-151 loss-the Tigers' first loss in two seasons-the following day to Xavier to sit at 1-1 after its opening week of action.

Against Amity, Tommy Pellatt shot a one-under-par 34 and Brian Carlson grabbed an even-par 35 to lead the Tigers to victory in their season opener. The pair combined to give Hand a nine-stroke lead and it was able to hold on for the victory.

Facing Xavier, Carlson shot even par and Pellatt was one over par, but it was not enough to overcome the Falcons' 148 tally. Todd McAndrew had a strong score of 38 out of the fifth spot in Hand's lineup.

Hand faced Branford on April 9 at the Yale Sailing Center on Long Island Sound. Branford won 2-0 in the high winds with gusts at 20 mph. Sailors racing were captains Ted Neighbors and Kate Mazzeo, Bill Brown, Nate Gould, Grace Adams, Andrew Mazzeo, along with Will Platt and DJ Scarpellino.
