Golf to Use Regular Season to Prep for States

The Indians' golf team will be taking on a higher level of competition during the regular campaign, but it hopes those matchups will season its links men come tournament time.

Head Coach Art Fonicello, in his 12th year leading Guilford on the links, follows up a team that finished 13-5 last spring before taking sixth and 11th for the SCC and Division II meets, respectively. While the Indians will take on Division I foes in league play, Fonicello thinks it will help Guilford play well above par in states.

"This will be a transition year for the program. We are now in a [SCC] league with primarily Division I teams. We are a Division II program so we will expect to find wins a lot harder to come by," said Fonicello, who will be assisted by Ron Acampora. "If we can stay focused on our stroke average, not on wins, then come state tournament time we may actually be in a better position to compete in the Division II State Tournament."

Sienna Fucci and Trent Kaisen will lead Guilford as senior captains, each of whom Fonicello said bring "leadership and big-game experience." Alongside those two in helping the Indians swing to their team targets of making the state tournament with a top 20 squad stroke average will be sophomores Ethan Bedell, Ben Fazzina, and Aiden Kellaher, plus senior Jeff Tucker.

Pivotal matches for Guilford are SCC clashes with Hamden, Shelton, Notre Dame-West Haven, and North Haven. Division I opponents on the SCC schedule for the Indians include Fairfield Prep, Amity, Cheshire, Hamden, Shelton, and Xavier.
