Hand Girls' Hoops Clinches Division; Boys' Indoor Track 4th at States


Indoor Track

The Tigers took part in the Class L State Championships as the boys finished fourth and the girls placed eighth. Ian Bergere won the pole vault (14-0) and was followed by Rich Sangster (2nd, 12-0), Kyle Boling (3rd, 11-6), and Hunter Stokes (5th, 10-6). Bergere also finished sixth for the 55 hurdles (8.67). The 4x200 relay of Cody Laska, Michael Sampson, Tommy Wilson, Ryan Monico, Michael Gilchrist, and Nicholas Balow came in sixth (1:38.91). Balow was fifth in the 600 (1:29.08), as was Wilson for the 300 (37.37). Wilson also finished in sixth in the 55 (6.85). The girls 4x200 group of Caroline O' Neil, Justine Griffin, Molly Citrin, Sam Schaefer, and Emily Shafer (1:49.90) took third; as did the SMR of Schaefer, Griffin, Kathryn Phillips, Lauren Brady, Shafer, and Madeline Yaggi (4:28.31). O'Neil additionally came in fourth for the 300 (42.77) and third in the 55 (7.41).

Girls' Basketball

The Tigers scored a 65-43 win at Hillhouse before a 58-39 home triumph over East Haven prior to a 48-44 loss to Foran to move to 14-5. By virtue of its 6-1 division record, coupled with Hillhouse defeating Law, the Tigers clinched the Hammonasset crown. At Hillhouse, Sophie Joel scored 17, Lily Taylor chipped in 12, Lauren Brandau added 10 and grabbed eight rebounds, Cassidy Wygonik and Gege Catalano combined for 11 points and 27 rebounds, Cori Ouellette added eight points, and Gillian Kraemer had six assists. Against the Yellowjackets, Joel led the Tigers with 24 points, five assists, three rebounds, and three steals; Taylor tallied nine points, five steals, and three blocks; Catalano totaled eight points and eight boards; Wygonik chipped in six points, six rebounds, and seven blocks; plus Kraemer dished out five assists. Facing Foran, Taylor led the Tigers with 12 points and Joel scored eight before leaving with a concussion.

Boys' Basketball

The Tigers fell to Hillhouse 67-42 before rebounding with wins at Foran (58-35) and East Haven (63-30) to improve to 10-6, 4-3. Facing Hillhouse, Andre Frederick led with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks. At Foran, Brendan Hughes scored 18 and Frederick had 12 points, seven boards, and four blocks. Against East Haven, Jeffrey Allen tallied 11 points and Hughes totaled 10 in a game that saw Frederick leave with a knee injury.

Wrestling

Hand defeated Guilford 36-31 before four losses at the Waterford Duals to move to 9-7, 3-1. Victories came thanks to Owen Gottlick, Luke Bernardo, Justin Dwyer, Connor Sakmar, Francis Regala, Kevin Mallon, and Ashton Gyenizs.

Skiing

Hand participated in its third race of the season as the girls placed seventh with Melanie Rennie placing sixth with a combined time of 49.06. The boys also placed seventh with Ethan Wilson placing as runner-up with a combined time of 46.00. The CISL hosted their annual Shoot Out competitions with Wilson, Stefan Pellitier, Rennie, and Carly Fischer qualifying. Those Tigers were also chosen to compete for Team Connecticut in New Hampshire from Friday, March 7-Sunday, March 9.

Fencing

The Tigers took part in a novice tournament and, on the girls' side, in an all-Hand final, Lauren Ganino took first and Jessica Litwin took second in 15-12 bout. With the boys, Will Salerno took fifth place and Andrew Hurley took 15th.
