HK hosted three Shoreline Conference opponents this past week and the Cougars won each game to improve the team's record to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play.
On Jan. 7, HK defeated Old Lyme 49-41 and the Cougars were led by Kiley Anderson's 18 points and 18 rebounds. Maya Savino and Caroline Fortuna each netted eight points while Lauren McCann had seven points and seven boards. Also scoring were Halie Serbent (4 points), Jess Kasper, and Brinley Anderson (2 points each). The next night, the Cougars hosted Portland and posted a 58-31 victory in which all players scored and the team hit a season-high nine three-point shots. Leading the charge was McCann with 12 points and seven rebounds while Kiley Anderson and Fortuna each scored nine with Anderson adding nine boards and Fortuna hitting three from downtown. Savino and Brinley Anderson each had seven points, plus Serbent chipped in with five and Kasper four. Meghan Gamache hit a three-pointer for her first points of the season and Analiese Bruder had a put-back basket to get in the box score for the first time. Valley Regional then visited on Jan. 10 and the Cougars prevailed 42-32. McCann led all scorers with 14 points (to go with 7 steals) and Fortuna had nine points and two assists while Savino and Serbent each scored six and had four steals and three steals, respectively. Rounding out the scoring were Kiley Anderson (3 points) with Kasper and Brinley Anderson (2 points apiece).
Indoor Track
On Jan. 4, HK took part in the Shoreline Coaches' Invitational at Hillhouse. The Cougars' girls placed second behind Tolland. The leading scorer was Leah Pfrommer, who won the long jump in setting a meet and school record with a leap of 17-11 and also took the high jump (5-0). Other major contributors were Sarah Smith (2nd in the shot put), Jenny Martin (2nd in the 300), Maddie Brandon (3rd in the 1,600; 4th in the 3,200), and Dani Roman (6th in the pole vault). In addition, the 4x800 of Menalie Hyde, Julie Faust, Jillian Clemente, and Lizzie Early placed fourth. The boys duplicated the girls' feat with a runner-up finish behind Ellington. The top finisher was the 4x200 of Canute Watson, John Schuster, Chris Ticino, and Nick Afragola with a school record 1:36.24. Watson also placed second in the 55 and led off SMR of Shuster, Logan O'Donnell, and David Baird (4th). Ethan Kovach earned second in the 300, third in the 55, and anchored the 4x400 (2nd). Also on that relay were Schuster, O'Donnell, and Afragola. Rounding out the scoring were Pat Fitzgibbons (4th in the 3,200) and Garrett Murphy (5th in the pole vault).
Boys' Swimming and Diving
The Cougars started the new year with a 91-70 win over Suffield to improve to 2-1.
For individual events, Garrett Mazziotti placed first in the 200 free (1:53.67), Gunnar Soneson won the 200 IM (2:22.61), and Mike Szafran captured the 50 free (24.56). Mazziotti placed first for the 100 butterfly (57.06), plus Conor Champagne took the 100 free (54.83). In relays, the meet began with a first-place finish in the 200 medley consisting of Soneson, Champagne, Mazziotti, and Connor McLaughlin (1:54.93). HK grabbed the 200 free relay consisting of Nico Hoffman, McLaughlin, Rachel Coady, and Szafran (1:52.09). In the 100 backstroke, Soneson placed first (1:02.28), Champagne won the 100 breaststroke (1:15.28), and HK won the 400 free relay behind Mazziotti, Soneson, Champagne, and Szafran (3:59.48).
