Softball Generates 75 Runs


The No. 7-ranked East Haven softball team held an offensive clinic last week, scoring 75 runs in its four wins to improve to 14-1 on the year and 6-0 in the SCC Oronoque.

The Yellowjackets beat Shelton on April 29, 18-3, behind a complete-game performance by Ireland Miessau on the mound. Amanda Jessey hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first inning and went 3-for-5 with four runs and four RBI on the day. Brianna Spadacenta also went deep in the first inning and had three runs and two RBI to go along with three hits in the mercy-rule win.

Later that night, the Easties took on North Branford and won 11-1. The team had 20 hits with Jessey leading the way with four of them. Spadacenta went deep once again and knocked home six runs for the Yellowjackets. She and Miranda Baldassare went back-to-back in the third inning while McKenzie Miessau had three hits and two RBI. Talia Loda pitched a complete-game five-hitter, striking out seven.

Next, East Haven took on its rival Branford and were able to mercy rule the Hornets. Although the game was 2-2 after two innings, East Haven scored seven runs in both the third and fifth innings and won 18-3. Miessau went 4-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and three runs scored and Jenna Gaudioso went 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs. Jessey continued her hot streak, getting three hits, knocking in three runs, and scoring twice. Loda pitched a complete-game five-hitter, improving her record to 7-0 on the season. She also sports a 0.71 ERA.

On May 3, Career was no match for East Haven. The Yellowjackets scored 11 runs in the first inning as Miessau went 4-for-6 with six RBI to lead the Easties and Jessey collected her 100th varsity hit-a home run-in her fourth at-bat of the game. Jena Villecco had three hits, two RBI, and two runs and Giovanna Russo collected two runs and three RBI. Kara Hanson, who pitched the final inning for East Haven, went 3-for-5 at the dish with three RBI and two runs scored. Laura Anderson also had three hits, scored four times, and knocked in three. Ireland Miessau picked up the win, pitching four innings, allowing one hit and striking out three. She improved to 5-1 on the year with a 1.32 ERA.Baseball

The Yellowjackets are now 6-9 on the season after dropping two of three games last week. The Easties started the week right with an 11-9 win over Hamden, but followed that up with consecutive losses to North Haven (4-0) and Fairfield Prep (10-5).

Justin Fry picked up the win against Hamden and Tom Moore got the save. Pete Grippo had three hits and four RBI to lead East Haven to victory. In a pivotal SCC Oronoque matchup, North Haven was able to conquer the Easties, winning 4-0 and allowing just two hits. Moore earned the loss despite allowing just two earned runs. The win improved North Haven to 5-0 in division play and East Haven dropped to 3-2.

Brandon Palm took the loss on the mound against Prep for East Haven, which had the early lead after scoring three runs, but didn't generate much offense after the first inning.

Boys' Tennis

The Yellowjackets won two of three matches last week and all three were tight with 4-3 scores. East Haven defeated Law and Hamden.

Evan Schneer has gotten back on track and has won his last four matches, including the clinchers against both Hamden and Law when the score was knotted at 3-3.

Girls' Tennis

The East Haven girls' tennis team came out victorious in two of its matches last week, beating West Haven 5-2 and Law 4-3.

Eliza Gladwin, Elise Tomasello, Julianna Maisano, and Jurgena Hysolli were all 2-1 on the week in the singles positions. Double teams Brianna Dessureau and Pam Masella and Corrine Palmer and Donita Canieso also went 2-1.

Against Law, with the match tied 3-3, Hysolli was able to win the third set in a tiebreak to give the Yellowjackets the victory.
