03/05/2013 11:00 PMThe Branford girls' basketball team saw its season come to a close with a 56-33 loss at Wilton in the first round of the Class L State Tournament on Feb. 25.
The Hornets were only down eight at halftime and cut the deficit to five on several occasions before Wilton blew open the game in the fourth quarter. Jenna Walsh hit four threes and scored 16 for the Hornets, who received seven points apiece from Gabby Melgar and Amber Markovitz. The 28th-seeded Hornets finished the campaign at 8-13. 5th-seeded Wilton was eliminated from the bracket by losing to Tolland in the next round.
"The girls played a great first half, but we just couldn't compete with their size," said Coach Joel Rebhun. "It was a closer game than the score shows."
Gymnastics
Sophomore Cynthia Lerman competed at the State Open at New Milford on March 1 and scored a 9.0 to tie for 16th on vault and posted an 8.55 to place 23rd on beam. Woodstock Academy won the meet.
"Cynthia held her own and hit both events. I was very satisfied with her final performance," said Branford coach Brian LeRoux. "Cynthia stayed focused and had a strong will to perform. The scores show the effort she put in."
Boys' Swimming and Diving
Branford tallied 590 points to finish in fourth place out of 16 teams at last week's SCC Championship. Fairfield Prep won the meet.
Greg Miles's team was led by a third-place finish in the diving from Dean Conte as the sophomore posted a score of 408.20 at Hamden High School on Feb. 26. Then at Southern Connecticut State University the next night, junior Ali Pourmaleki came in third in the 500 freestyle (4:57.33) with the Hornets' 200 medley relay of Pourmaleki, Quinn Bohan, Alec Boucher, and Robert Miniter also placing third (1:45.71).
In the two other relays, Branford's quartet of Miniter, Charlow, Shand, and Pourmaleki came in fourth place at 3:28.69; and the 200 freestyle relay of Miniter, Shand, Thomas Shao, and Charlow finished seventh by swimming 1:37.63.
Additionally for Branford, Bohan took fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.32), Tyler Shand was seventh in the 200 freestyle (1:51.56) and 500 freestyle (5:06.26), Travis Charlow finished 12th in the 200 freestyle (1:53.47) and 100 freestyle (52.22) with Pourmaleki taking 20th in the former event at 1:57.09, Alec Boucher claimed 10th in the 200 individual medley (2:11.24) and 16th in the 100 butterfly (59.43), Brian Curseaden placed 13th in the 200 IM (2:13.66) and 11th in the 500 freestyle (5:18.50) with Benjamin Greenvall finishing 10th in the latter event at 5:15.99, Henry Jin was 18th in the 100 backstroke (1:05.52) and Nathaniel Barton took 20th in the 100 butterfly (59.83).
