O'Connor, McNamara Top Indians' JV Fencers


Zach O'Connor, fencer for Guilford High School's junior varsity team, took the top spot in the statewide JV fencing tournament at North Haven on Jan. 5. O' Connor beat the tournament's top side from Farmington Valley Fencing Academy in the championship bout by a score of 15-14. With 64 male JV foil fencers from 13 high schools competing, Guilford's Jack Davidson had a great showing as well, taking third place in the tournament. The Indians had additional placers in Noah Elmeleki (13th), Liam Lynders (14th), Isaac Abrams (23rd), Sam Wong (24th), Liam Doolan (25th), and Kyle Landry-McWillaims (38th).

On the girls' side, Katie McNamara took home second place in the statewide tournament, losing to fourth seed Hannah Bennett from Farmington Valley Academy. Out of 39 competitors, Guilford's Annie Yang came in seventh, along with Katie Nolan (14th), Natalie Mann (19th), Kate Clancy (21st), Margaux Shoff (22nd), Sophie Kaplan (25th), and Cleo Adebiyi (34th).
