Valley Gymnastics Opens Season with a Victory


Mikayla Connor and the Valley gymnastics team earned its first win of the season on Dec. 27, defeating Stonington with 124.55 points.

The Valley Regional gymnastics squad is well on its way, leading off its campaign with a 124.55-124.05 win over Stonington in its opening meet on Dec. 27.

In the vault event, Melanie Lee scored a 7.7, Jenna Armenia a 7.85, Julianna Alvord a 9.05, and Mikayla Connor an 8.55. On bars, Lee had a 4.4, Armenia a 6.8, Alvord an 8.2, and Connor a 7.8; while on beam, Lee scored a 5.0, Armenia an 8.0, Maggie Calamari an 8.0, Alvord an 8.3, and Connor an 8.5. In the floor event, Lee accrued a 6.0, Armenia a 7.4, Calamari an 8.1, Alvord an 8.35, and Connor an 8.55. The all-around scores added up to Alvord scoring a 33.9, Connor a 33.4, Armenia a 29.05, Lee a 23.1, and Calamari a 16.1

"For our first meet we did pretty well," said Coach Carl Cavrell. "We had a new freshman Melanie Lee and unfortunately an injured captain Maggie Calamari who could only compete on two events.We hope to show improvement and increase our team scores over time."
