Lauren Macolino Wins the Beam for Gymnastics

Junior Marie Facin posted a stellar score of 8.3 on the beam for North Haven gymnastics in its meet versus Law on Jan. 3.

Junior captain Lauren Macolino won the beam routine with a score of 7.2 to lead North Haven gymnastics in last week's 115.5-55.5 loss to Law at In-Flight Gymnastics on Jan. 3. Macolino additionally placed fourth on bars (5.3), tied for fifth on vault (7.7), and was fifth on floor (7.3) en route to finishing third in the all-around with a total of 27.5.

"The main ingredient on the beam is to not fall off because that's a big deduction and Lauren stayed on the beam to win the event. She was focused and mentally prepared for the beam and only girls who are mentally strong are the ones who excel," said Coach Brian LeRoux, who's assisted by his daughter Jamie LeRoux. "Lauren is also an excellent captain who works hard and knows how to motivate the team."

Junior Marie Facin also scored 27.5 in the all-around by virtue of taking second on vault (8.3), third on bars (6.3), third on beam (6.2), and sixth in the floor routine (7.2). Facin was an All-SCC athlete last winter.

"The highlight of the night for Marie was the vault," said LeRoux, whose team is 0-2. "She didn't even perform the vault routine that might win that event as we're holding out the big one for another time, but Marie did do a front handspring and scored an 8.3 out of 8.6, which is phenomenal."

Sophomore Amanda Macolino did not compete at this meet due to injury, but Coach LeRoux looks forward to how she can contribute to his squad when she returns.

"Amanda will probably be able to add at least another 27 to 28 points to our team score," he said. "Beam is her biggest strength and she has a beautiful floor routine and so she will give us an all-around boost in her four events."
