Tigers Fight to Third to Start Season

The Hand fencing team kicked off its season with the East Lyme Invitational on Dec. 8 with four fencers finishing in the top 16. Griffin McShane finished in a tie for third while Kyle Welch finished 11th for the boys out of a pool of 77 fencers. Also competing for the boys' team were John Morgan (23rd), James Welch (24th), Conor Stevens (37th), and David Lazer (58th).

Two of the girls' fencers finished in the first 16. Amy Salerno finished 11th and Chloe Broquet finished 16th out of a group of 51 fencers. Also fencing for the girls' team were Alex Sammataro (38rd), Rochelle Horanzy (41st), and Katherine Nichols (48th).

"I am thrilled that we took third place in our first tournament of the season," said Head Coach Sarah Lam. "Griffin took the team to the top by coming in third and his ranking in this tournament really establishes Hand as a formidable opponent. I was also impressed with how well all of our fencers did. Many of our top finishers were knocked out of the tournament by fencers who ultimately placed in the top five so I am looking forward to an exciting season for our fencing squad."
