Cross-Country Posts Stellar Finishes in West Beach Invitational

The Guilford boys' and girls' cross country teams were in midseason form last week when they took to the shores of Hammonasset State Park in the West Beach Invitational. Racing against eight other schools on Sept. 11, the Indians boasted the top overall finisher on the girls' side and the second-place finisher on the boys' side, looking every bit like the dominant teams many have come to expect.

The girls were led by their three upperclassmen in Olivia Schultes, Carolyn Duman, and Fiona Doolan. The trio captured three of the top six spots with Schultes coming in second (14:04.69), Duman in fourth (14:07.62), and Doolan in sixth (14:12.55). Guilford was well-rounded as its four other scoring runners all placed in the top 25. Sarah Bohan (16th, 14:57.66), Evelyn Ferrall (18th, 15:06.96), Marieke Page (21st, 15:12.48), and Kirsten Morro (25th, 15:43.44) all helped the Indians earn 46 points with a total team time of 72:29.48.

The boys' team looked equally as sharp as it came in second place, finishing 21 points behind overall winner Haddam-Killingworth. A trio of juniors led the way for Guilford as Tim Kenefick (2nd, 15:32.88), Sal Siciliano (4th, 15:48.08), and Ian Connell (10th, 16:16.74) all earned top-10 finishes. Senior Chris Burkle came in 16th (16:26.93), Ben Moskow in 19th (16:45.62), Zach Demarco 21st (16:51.14), and Matt Mirek 27th (17:07.30) all helped the Indians to 51 total points and a team time of 80:50.25.
