Valley Gymnastics Opens Season With Win

The Valley gymnastics team came into its meet on Dec. 28 with numerous question marks after losing a majority of its state title-winning team to graduation and having much less experience this winter, but the Warriors battled through falls and tough competition at Flip Flop Gymnastics to pull out their first win in their first meet of the 2011-'12 campaign.

Scoring a 124.65, Valley defeated Haddam-Killingworth (122.7), Stonington (116.7), Old Lyme (108.2), and East Lyme, which didn't post a team score due to low numbers.

Freshman Juliana Alvord posted the team's highest all-around score with a 33.75 with her highest event score being a 9.15 on vault. Freshman Michaela Connor scored a 31.15 all-around with her 8.5 on floor being her highest event score, followed by junior Maggie Calamari's 30.6 all-around score and an event-high 8.5 on floor. Sophomore Jenna Armenia rounded out the competition with a 29.15 all-around score.

"I did not expect our scores to be anywhere near last year's scores so our score in this meet was about where I thought we'd be," said Coach Carl Cavrell. "The kids had several falls on beam, but we cleaned things up nicely to get the win. To get the first meet and win out of the way was a good thing. I think we'll be pretty close with HK in all our meets so it'll be interesting to see how that rivalry goes throughout the season."
