Local Youngsters Learn to Sail to the High Seas

Pictured are thirteen young sailors aged 10 to 14 who completed a condensed five-day Sailing 101 Learn How to Sail course recently offered by the Leetes Island Community Association. Instructions were given by Leetes Island veteran sailors Paul Odegaard, Jim and Theresa Hedleston, John Brissette, and Jean Yves Noblet. From left to right are Odegaard, along with Cassius Eaton, Hayden Page, Cody Wright, Adam Burkhardt, Meredith Shank, Isabella Wynne-Markham, Faith Wershba, Samantha Shank, Layla Wazorko, Catherine Miller, Martha Barry, Caroline Miller, Caroline Barry, and Jim Hedleston. During the class, the juniors learned the basics of on-the-water safety, sunfish boat rigging, capsize and recovery, no-wind propulsion, and all the points of sailing. On graduation day, the young skippers demonstrated their new skills by completing two fun races around the buoys in Island Bay. The races were held in loaner Sunfish with two or three juniors per boat. In addition to conventional awards for overall race placement, fun prizes were presented for Best Capsizes/Recoveries (Miller and Barry), Best Bad-Start Recovery (Page and Burkhardt), Most Improved Skipper (Burkhardt), and Perfect Attendance (Caroline and Martha Barry, Miller, Wynne-Markham, Wershba, Eaton, Burkhardt, and Wazorko).
