04/28/2011 12:00 AMThe Hand sailing team participated in the New England Schools Sailing Association O'Day Qualifier regatta at Ida Lewis Yacht Club in Newport, Rhode Island on April 16. Hand placed seventh out of the 12 schools entered. The sailors for Hand were senior captain Rich Denton, sophomores Travis Carlisle, Griffin Pilz, and Casey Pilz. Weather conditions were difficult, with temperatures about 42 degrees and the wind blowing 20 miles per hour with gusts at 25 and above. The regatta was canceled after 10 races because of sharply increasing winds, up to 30 miles per hour, with even stronger winds predicted.
Several boats capsized in the cold water, but all sailors were wearing dry suits that kept them dry and warm. Pilz tied for fourth place in the A Division fleet. This team placement is the best Hand has done in its brief three years of existence.
