Nibbles: Dining in the Dark

When I picked up Dining in the Dark, a memoir by The New York Times food writer and restaurant reviewer Bryan Miller, I read it in one day. That’s how terrific it is. Before he worked for The Times, Miller also was a sometimes sous chef and waiter at Restaurant du Village in Chester, and he also worked as a restaurant reviewer at The Hartford Courant’s Northeast magazine. He writes about all of that in addition to his struggles with bipolar II disorder. He writes about sometimes taking upwards of 100 pills a week and how his lifestyle and illness cost him two wives, many friends, and his job. But he never missed a deadline. He is a superb writer and any of you who love food should put this book on your must-read list.—Lee White
